The average view is that 282 + supercap + 300 is good combo. That however is the same price as a 552.

True in my case… 
Not long ago you would be shot down in flames for suggesting here that you should use a 282 and a 300 together. My brief experience suggests that this is indeed a poor match, and that if you’re climbing the Naim ladder you should always upgrade the preamp first and then the power amp, not the other way round.
Don’t take my word for it though, if your own ears tell you that it’s a good match, and you’ve actually bothered to make a proper comparison, get whatever works for you.

Wait… many folks use 300 with 272. The 282 isn’t less capable than the 272.

Yeah, people do all sorts of weird stuff to keep the box count down. I even bought a non-Naim amp.

I wouldn’t advise that as a sensible option unless you have (or intend to get) a 555 for the 272, but then…

But a 282 + Supercap will remain very quiet no matter what you set on the volume control as it lacks a source!
Is it better than a ND5 XS + 282 + Supercap… Yes.
This is limited by the ND5 XS.
Is it better than a ND5 XS + XP5 XS + 282 + Supercap… Yes.
This is still limited by the ND5 XS.
In the context a ND555 via 272 or 282.
In the context of an ND555 you should be using a 552 (or at the very least a 252).

We will have to agree to disagree there. My daily experience of 282/HCDR/300DR is a very satisfying one - but everyones room/ears are different!

I’ve owned both setups, the 272/555DR/300 is an excellent package but the 282/SCDR/300 even when fed with only the ND5XS2 is better all round, add an MScaler / Qutest well that’s a different story altogether.

A NAC282 and NAP200 are an excellent combination. I’d love to hear a NAC282 and NAP200DR. That might just be a killer 2 box amp combo (OK 2 and a 1/4 box).

Much better than 202/250.
I replaced a 102 with an 82 whilst still using my 140. The difference between the pre-amps was amazing.

At a show a couple of years ago I thought I was listening to a 282/250DR combination. I asked Mark Raggett where he’d hidden the HICAP and was seriously impressed to find it was a 200DR powering the pre. It was only a show demo, but the combination was singing, fed by an NDX2, can’t remember the speakers.

I did that with my 250. The 102 just didn’t gel properly - but the 72 which I had before did…
The 82 restored the Naim Magick…
