1st timer - one concern

Hello friends

Fist time with a Naim product and I have it on demo for one more day.

Love everything about it except the sound it makes when turning on or off as I fear it will damage my speakers

I know it says to leave on for the burn in Period but that also concerns me as we have some wicked storms

Does that thud when turning on and off do anything to gear over long term use?

It is both normal and unlikely to damage speakers. Unless it is far louder than anything you ever play through them it’s normal.

What naim products, particularly pre and power amp are you listening to?

Profile suggest a Nait 5si

Leave it on 24/7 and only power down for storms and longer breaks from home. The thump is normal.

As an aside, the Naim New Classic products don’t make a thump when powering off or going in to Standby.

IIRC, there have been threads that suggest turning off the system b/c of storms is of limited value, if any. The only reason I can see is if your system is by an open window and might get wet.

I have a Nait 5si and it is always on even during thunderstorms.

If you get a lightning strike there is the risk of everything plugged in getting fried. Unplug whatever you want to protect from thar risk.

Hi @Thejazzhideout and welcome to the forum. As others have said, the thump is nothing to be worried about. You might try setting volume to zero and perhaps muting the amp, via the remote if it’s a 5si, before switching off if you really find it annoying. Personally, I would leave it switched all the time on for best sound quality, unless severe storms are forecast or you’re going away for more than a day or so.

Yes sorry it’s 5si

When you leave it on do you hear anything from speakers?

If I get close I can hear a slight ssss sound but it’s super quiet an volume all the way down

Vintage Naim and, particularly, old Exposure designs can be much louder when turned on/off and never caused me an issue. I must have used 20+ speaker models with them although mostly Linn.

In my experience, the signal has to be much louder to cause issues. For example, it is painfully / unbearably loud when you accidentally short an amplifier which in turn can damage or blow drive units.

Nope it is completely silent.

Well most amps I know other than Naim will simply go pop and shoot out smoke the instant you short them. Naim will too though from experience not in that fist millisecond like other amps. Naim amps can handle 1 Ohm for brief periods which isn’t far off a short.

More than one accident when changing wires sleep deprived over the years.

Horrible isn’t it :frowning:

Especially when it’s stock in the dem room that you don’t own. Linn LK100s really put on a firework show. Thankfully that was my boss’s error not mine.

But I’ve an AV amp in my workshop I blew up a couple years ago doing a service while not paying attention and forgot to put insulators on the shafts of the scope probes attached to a power amp modules.
