2 HiCaps for 282+Stageline

I know there are loads of old posts about benefits of an extra Hi-Cap , but this is slightly different…

Currently 1 x Hi-Cap DR feeding 282 with Stageline powered from the aux2 output of the 282.

I have an olive Hi-Cap which is effectively redundant after the HCDR purchase.

So I think my options are…

  1. use the olive HC to power the Stageline, negating the power out from the 282
  2. swap the olive HC for a HC2 (so more aesthetically aligned after changing 102/180 to 282/300DR) to power the Stageline - pretty much zero expenditure
  3. sell the olive HC and buy another HCDR - two HCDRs to the 282 and retain the power out from 282 to Stageline

Option 2 seems a bit of a no-brainer (near zero cost) - however it only gives a SQ gain when using the stageline
Option 3 would give two HCDRs to the 282 to benefit streaming and CD sources but perhaps give little extra to the stageline when in use as still reliant on 282 power out ? Relatively little cost to change - maybe £400 max

I went with 3x HC DR. 2x on 282 and one on my SuperLine. Had the 2 on the 282 before the SuperLine joined the system and still maintain its my favourite way of powering my 282. I tried a SuperCap and honestly preferred the 2x HC.
Good luck with your process👍🏼

Option 3 would deliver dual 24V rails to the Stageline, which is significant performance wise.

Does this give dual 24V rails to SuperLine as well? I’m some day planning to go for 282 and have also planned Supercap for the SL. But in that case I might go via double HC’s to 282 and aux2 to SL.

Too many options.

Yes, but note that the 24v power rails on Aux2 are not dedicated rails but shared with other stages within the 282. To make the most of the Superline, you’d either need to power it from a dedicated Hicap or preferably a Supercap which the Superline can fully utilise via the Burndy connection.

Thanks! I’m aware those are not dedicated but sounds it’s still an upgrade comparable to using only one HC to 282. Supercap would be the ultimate answer but it’s challenging to get those to Nordics and I’m still missing the green for it.

I had a 282 with 2 HCdrs then had ( still have) a Superline on aux2. Bought a Supercap and put that on the 282 and one HCdr on the Superline.

For me, the SC was not an improvement over 2 HCdrs on the 282.
With a 282, feeding the Superline via aux2 was not as good as feeding it with its own HCdr.

As usual, a Supercap lead to a 252. This does NOT need a HCdr on the Superline. Just feed it via aux2.

Sold the 282 and one HCdr, now need to sell the second HCdr. I think the 252 has a dedicated feed from the SC transformer, whereas the 282/HCdr does not. That can be the main explanation for the 252 being great via the aux2 and the 282 needing its own HCdr.

Thanks for all the replies.

Sounds like keeping the olive or swapping to a HC2 for the Stageline is next step

And then look for a second HCDR for the 282

It doesn’t surprise me since you went from a full dual mono setup to a shared power supply.

I run my Stageline S from an olive HC.

So perhaps doing similar, and then a second HC DR for the 282 would be the next step going forward.

Can you explain you reasoning a bit more please?

I’ve today purchased a classic HC (non DR) for the Stageline. At least that’ll keep the 282 happy. Will now sell the olive HC to recoup some funds.

I will look for a second HCDR to add to the 282 in time - no rush

Thanks all
