250 vs 300

You can always try both imperfect options and choose the better one. I surely would appreciate a bit more flexibility by Naim for cable lengths, though I understand the logistical complications.

My 300DR head unit and power supply both sit on the bottom shelve of my rack, so the burndies touch the floor. Still huge improvement over a 250DR.

If an amplifier sounds bad because a cable is touching the floor, that is poor design. If a multi thousand pound amplifier sounds bad because a cable is touching the floor, that is terrible design.

The reason why you have a Star and won’t be tempted to upgrade

Actually, thinking of trying a 250DR home demonstration. Anything can happen. (In the next hour.)

No burndys with the 250 dr. So you can’t connect wrongly. Snaic cables are very flexible.

Nobody’s really saying it sounds bad. Many people here just obsess about getting the very best out of it after spending that much money.

Couldn’t get the dressing right. It looks like a rat’s nest. But I decided to forget about it. And the system (555, 552, 300) is nevertheless a joy to listen to.

No need to dress correctly in your case, the spirits will take care of the signal

My dealer always says not to worry too much about it, it will sound great anyway. That said, nothing wrong with spending an hour or two to get it right either, and I do think it makes a difference - but it doesn’t make it sound “bad” otherwise.

With my system (lots of units and cables, and not very accessible from the back) and Naim’s cable lengths, there is no way to not have a rats’ nest if the rack is not very high and two stacks with quite some distance. But with some care it can be a rats’ nest where cables don’t touch regardless

Yes indeed. Another fetish came in since then. Another sound improvement. Not on the picture yet. And no picture of the 552. Will be difficult to tell the difference with the 252… It will be for the 2021 system pictures thread which is due soon.

I am in the same situation. I tried to do the same thing that you describe. I separated the power from the signal, put some foam when it was impossible to have cables not touching. I was unable to do better.

Yeah, I am not sure it can even be completely avoided even if there is enough space unless each level is ridiculously high

I know. The laws of distribution show that there will be people on the forum that will think that a cable touching the floor is a high crime. There will be others that wouldn’t mind wrapping their cables around a radiator being used as a radio transmitter and the bulk of the rest are somewhere in between. There is nothing wrong with obsessive cable dressing, but for a 0.37% improvement in perceived sound quality, most people will just be as tidy as is practical. I hope.

It’s more 10% than 0,37%.
However having the ps on another rack is even a bigger uplift.
Cleaning all the contacts every 6 months is another 5%.
All the details matter .
If you buy 500 series electronics and stack them all together in an ikea table, better stay with an integrated, IMHO.

@michelw, I’ve said it before but I love your room setup and naturally those lovely K6’s

Thank you marcusman!

Its easy, just lift the cable off the floor and see if it makes a difference, same as touch the cable with a mains cable, once again see if it can be heard, if not dont worry about it all, simple.
A lot off owners like to dress the cables and take a lot off time in doing this, that’s fine, you could argue that in that time your brain has certainly forgotten exactly how it sounded before, and after spending the time doing it, you need it and expecting it to sound better?
I do wonder if its just a naim thing, but whatever it is, if it makes you happy then why not
