Hi Thomas, thank you for your break down of differences between the two makes Best Peter
Yes thanks much Thomas
After reading some strong opinions and/or over simplifications, I couldn’t resist illustrating them
When things get a bit too serious, the best way to take a step back is humour
The only time I heard a Statement system was with Magico Q5s. I’ve been a hihi enthusisast for more than 40 years and I didn’t even think that getting that level of sound and music was technically achievable…
Claude
Hi Claude,
At the time the Q5 was Magico’s best speakers, later followed by the Q7. But the Q5 was really a pain to drive, it couldn’t be better paired with a Statement.
The M6 are even better speakers. Same design as the M2.
I believe a showroom in Zürich has a Statement, probably paired with Focal speakers.
But not sure I’ll find the motivation to go there. I’m really not into going to showrooms, or reading hifi magazines, etc. But, if I’m around, I could make an exception for the Statement. It not only is an extraordinary amp, it also is a piece art
I totally agree with you! This forum should be both fun and educational, and sometimes aspirational.
Great to see this photo.
I actually visited the Salk institute in 1995 while on a study tour of world leading institutions linked to healthcare.
From memory the institute was noted for being the location of 2 people that became Nobel prize winners for their work.
Ther’re not many topics on Spendor on the forum, lucky I found this.
I’m pairing 202/200/HC with Spendor Classic 100 (previously SP2/3R2 which was perfectly matched) and find this combo is a bit “short” of power.
Now I’m on the path to upgrade for Classic 100. Please advise shoud I go to 250DR or 300DR (finance should be considered also)? Should I pair N272 instead 282/252?
Thanks and be safe
Not a Classic 100 but I my 9-2s get on well with 252/300. I used to have Sopra 2s and have be more than happy the 9-2s. I love the Sopras but my wife said that they were not pretty!
Better have a better pre and lower power amp than lower pre and better power amp. So 282 / or 252/ 250 , better than 272/300.
You could sell your Cdx2 and dac VI and get an Ndx2 for example.
282/250/ Ndx2 is a very well balanced system.
Okay sweetie, decision time:
- 252/SC, SN2 as power amp
- 252/SC/250
- 252/SC, SN2 as power amp and swap for 300 in a few years
You know the room setup and size.
I would go for the last option…your 300 in a few years…well i’d give you a year before you jump😉
Option 2 for me - jump in 4/5 years to 300
252/sc/250. Magic sounding system.
Indeed Bruss, my current system - probably won’t move upwards at this stage in my life - it just does it for me
I fear the 300 will be too much in your room. Or if you can test. 252/250 is very musical.
So you want to buy before the dealer closes?
Second option sounds great. Would like to have such.
I’d go for the NAP300DR, especially if you intend to listen at low levels (during evenings. My daughters’ sleeping room was not far).
This was one of the main reasons I went for the 300DR in the first place.
And the 252/300 is a very well ballanced combo. Probably the sweet spot in Naim’s amplification (price to performance ratio).
When trying to find information about both the 250DR and 300DR I came across an interesting review.
It might be of some help :
Ultimately the third option is best as it should be!
Having recently changed from a 250Dr to a 300DR the improvement was massive to me and with speakers probably of a similar capability (Kudos S20) to yours.
Another interesting option is using 282/HiCap DR/300DR, especially as you already have the Hicap. I ran this for a 2-3 weeks after the 300 was bought, I changed to a Supercap as it seemed the right thing to do. It was and is a good upgrade but I could have quite happily lived with the HiCap DR long term and was surprised that the larger of the two recent upgrades was the 300 DR. Some dealers will tell you that a HiCap DR is better than a non DR Supercap.
The second option ‘completes’ things now and allows an upgrade path to a 300 later should you so wish. It has the advantage of one less box too. Also it would be worth exploring if a change from XPS DR to 555 DR on the NDX2 gives better value compared to an upgrade of the 250DR to 300DR.
Very much agreed when I went from a 250dr to a 300dr the difference in my system was incredible low level listening was particulalry enhanced.
