250 vs 300

I discussed the 250 / 300 option again with my dealer. He feels that I won’t achieve the additional benefits of the 300 unless I had a larger room with larger speakers (+$$) as a result of a house move. As that isn’t in my plans, it will be the used 252/SC and a new 250.

Thanks tor everyone’s input.

An honest dealer, a rare case today :+1:

I think you’ll be very happy with 252/SCDR/250DR…let it come on song for a week or three, and it’s very good indeed.

Congratulations on your decision. It will sound amazing. And given the room size and all the advice given I am sure the 250DR will be enough.

My old 250DR powered my SL2s beautifully also my Nait 2 does a decent job but the 300 (mine is none DR) has control, authority over the SL2s and adds so much more, you almost forget the amp exists in the room.

That’s about the same size as my room (although I’ve got polished wooden floors and probably too much glass). I find that the 250DR works really well. If you’re ever in Wellington you’re welcome to pop by to have a listen…

That said, I would be interested in hearing a 300 in the mix. A pre-loved 252 and supercap is first on the list though

Interesting comment… need to audition a 300 Dr soon I guess

I’ll bet if you took all that stuff off the coffee table and off the tops of those beautiful ProAc’s things would sound better.

You should adress your post to @michelw , it’s his system.

Well, indeed it’s my system.

Music is a total aesthetic experiment. But it can be enhanced by the environment. Opera is more than just music.

The same goes with my lounge. I may loose a little something sound wise with the coffee table and the premier art objects, which remains to be proven, but I gain a lot from their aesthetics. I would not call that stuff which I think is disrespectful. Anyhow, add a good bottle of wine and I am in heaven.

Back to the topic, when I replaced my 250-2 by the 300, I found the difference in precision very notable. I haven’t compared the 300 with the 250DR though.

I totally agree, the atmosphere, the decoration of the space in which we are feeling good, enhances the pleasure of listening.
I would not like to live in an anechoic chamber, which would get my mood down.

@michelw I’ve said it before but I totally Love your room. Yours and ChrisBell’s should be part of ProAc’s Advertisement.

I had 250dr its avery good amp but the 300dr has alot more grip on the bottom end and the 282 I had is definitely more forward the 252 which I have now is more organised more open in presentation but you will not go wrong with either preamp both are excellent.

I recently moved from 250DR to 300DR and was initially underwhelmed tbh. 2 months later…I’m smiling from ear to ear. Superb performance driving my Kudos 606.

Exactly my configuration as of 30 minutes ago after installing a new-to-me 252 (replacing a very nice 282) with my recently acquired SCDR, 250DR, XPS-DR and NDX2. I was already pleased with the 282 and a Chord Hugo2 with DC-1 in this setup, now I will have to revalidate all my previous assumptions. The 252 ‘accidentally’ appeared in my eBay watchlist this week from a genuine seller, and now it is here (12 months earlier than my upgrade plan :innocent: )

Hi-Line for the NDX2/252 and WitchHat Hatpin interconnects were also installed this week, firstly with the 282. Another ‘uptick’.

The whole system sounds more relaxed, more detailed and is already a greater pleasure to listen to.

Planning to settle for a 252 this year but they are so rare outside UK and now with Brexit second handed units are up 25% due to VAT :slightly_frowning_face:

Has anyone gone from 250DR to a non-DR 300 - were there any upsides or downsides, or just sideways, to this move ?

Having just bought a 300 (non DR) instead of a planned 250 DR I’m also very interested to know…

Whether it is the 250 or 300, the DR technology makes remarkable difference.

In my opinion it doesn’t make much sense to compare a 250DR to a 300 non-DR.

When I bought the 300DR I came across this HiFi Critic interesting review.
It might be of some help :
