I’m going to take the racks apart and take all the cables out and set everything up from scratch with everything else out of the chain except the 252/non-Naim PS/500 into my speakers. I’ll take some pics as you suggest.
Did you press pre on the remote before trying it?
Before taking the racks apart I would do some more simple checks which I think would identify and hopefully resolve the issues.
As both channels work when in mono that implies to me the everything in the audio chain after the mono button is working and cabled correctly, that includes most of the 252, the non-naim PS and the 500. In my view the most likely issue is with the interconnect cable between the NDX2 and the 252. I believe you are using an RCA interconnect, so please make sure that the cable is securely attached at both ends and the same channel on the 252, if it is try swapping the left and right inputs on the 252 end and see if the working channel moves. If it does then the issue will be with either the interconnect cable or the NDX2.
Regarding the issue with the remote can you make sure the 5-pin din snaic lead is securely attached to the 252 and the PS.
I hope this helps.
Naim SC and a 552 are on my shopping list
Beware using a non-Naim power supply. Their use here can cause operational issues at best, and damage to the connected Naim equipment at worst, which the Naim warranty may well not cover. Try the proper Naim PS on it (and hopefully the 252 is fine still)
I’ve taken apart and connected temporarily so I can get some feedback on the cabling before I try to connect mains and speakers.
-
500 burndy bands are at 500 end.
-
XPS burndy band is at NDX side
-
non-Naim PS burndy is at 252 side
-
500 Ch1 band is green and Ch2 band is red.
-
DIN from NDX to 252, band is at NDX
The cabling looks fine to me. Do you have another interconnect to try between the NDX and 252, either another din, or a 2 RCA to 2 RCA. That may be the issue, as suggested above.
Thanks.
I do have another din and a set of rcas, so I can try them if necessary
Is that link plug supposed to be there?
On the 252 it’s just a dust cover I think.
So plug it in and see what happens.
Yes, it covers the powered aux 2 socket. It’s just a plastic cap, not a link plug. The 252 can only be powered by a Supercap, so doesn’t need link plugs.
The power switch on the non-Naim PS is not turned on and there isn’t a mains cable attached to it?
SUCCESS!
It was of course the NDX/252 interconnect. I had replaced it with a Chord Signature which is refusing to play on both channels. The standard Naim cable works perfectly.
Going to try some rca’s as well before I start the long evening of getting everything back on the fraims
Thank you all for your help, esp to all those who identified the interconnect as the culprit. I had convinced myself that I had blown up one channel of the 500!
I still have the issue with the 252 remote not controlling the volume button nor the balance button so I’ll have to play some more once everything is back in its place.
That’s brilliant news. You got to the bottom of it. It may be a faulty remote control. It’s not the end of the world if the remote doesn’t work.
@HungryHalibut normally gets to the bottom of things. I thought it might be NDX2 but glad it’s only the interconnect.
Enjoy your amazing set up!
I’m not taking the credit for this. It was @LutherP who suggested it, in their first ever post on the Forum. Welcome Luther!! I guess the OP missed their post amongst everything else.
I’d suggest you forget the RCAs. Din is the superior connection and the Naim interconnect is excellent. Sent the Chord cable back to Chord for repair. It will then be an easy swap at a later date. To use RCA you need to change settings and it’s another opportunity for things to go wrong.
You mentioned a 552 above, and a Supercap. Remember that the 552 comes with its own PS and cannot use a Supercap. If you plan to keep the 252 long term then a Supercap is what to go for. But as you have a 500, a 552 makes so much more sense.
I’m so pleased you’ve got it sorted. It’s so frustrating when you can’t figure these things out, and the more complex a system becomes, the harder it gets. All those pesky cables!!
We’re looking forward to your next 94 statements
Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I have been hanging around this forum for a few years learning from the many knowledgeable contributors and thought it was about time I contributed something.
Anyway, glad I could help.
I suspect you’re right. I’ll grab some new batteries today and try that first.
Thanks for your input LutherP and HungryHalibut - I don’t think it would have occurred to me to try swopping out an expensive new cable!
I think I’m all spent out for the moment! I’ve got a few old bits still to sell, so I might see if I can get enough together for a 552.
To be honest, I’ve over complicated it myself by wanting a hybrid music/AV system and dedicating one power amp to each set of speakers. The cabling is just impossible. I think I could definitely benefit from swopping out the 4 NAP100’s for one 8 channel amp.
This was me after ripping the system apart
and around 6 hours later!
Yes, I know I shouldn’t be stacking the units on the top shelves or the PS under the 500, but I’ve run out of rack space so it will have to do until I get another couple of shelves. The Marantz AV10 is too deep to fit on the fraim shelf. I fashioned some feet using spike shoes but will need some thing more permanent.
Last pic from the listening position for good measure
Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated!
