252 Sound Signature

Lol…I agree to some large degree, HH.

But then, we wouldn’t experience the journey you had. And as we all know, the journey’s better than the destination, sometimes!

But I do see a twin Fraim in my future, one day
It’ll look nice and I’ve no doubt, sound great.

To address the original question, the pre-amp section of the 282 and 252 are the same, the only difference in the internals are the power supply section (take a look at the internal layout and boards of the two preamps). Of course, the power supply configuration can affect the sound but I’d be surprised if the 282 sounds “better” than a 252. Someone may prefer the presentation/sound of a 282 but that doesn’t necessarily make it better. Similarly, we get used to a certain presentation of sound from a component over time and it may become more acceptable… maybe even “better”, after our ears “burn in” to the sound (as opposed to the equipment “burning in”).

I upgraded from a 282 with a SuperCap DR to a 252 with the same SCDR. The 252 is most definitely not thinner sounding. I found it has much improved detail and definition, and the midrange filled out some (thus, less thin if anything). I don’t think there was anything about the 282 that I would say was better or even as good. FWIW, my 282 was serviced (recapped) about a year before I got the 252.

I’d bet that if I added a 282 back I would feel like someone threw a blanket over my speakers.

It also depends how we define ‘thinner sounding’. I’ve just upgraded my source from to NDS from N272. To my ears the 272 has a slight tendency to add artificial weight to some instruments, especially strings.

Improved detail and definition could be perceived as a thinner sound if we’re used to something different. I haven’t done the 282 / 252 comparison, but that’s my impression of the two streamers. The NDS gives a more nuanced / delicate rendition – which is quite different from ‘thinner’.

Yeah, it’d be real nice to be able to just get out and do some of the 'ol normal things again.
That came up a coupla times today …

I guess it could be worse. If it wasn’t for online shopping and Mrs Pete’s constant click and collect I’d probably be saving money.

I think we are probably saving more money than usual. Still getting used to the overall weirdness tho.
And hey, Pete … check the Best Jokes thread. There’s finally some funny ones in the last 5 or so posts.

I stop viewing that thread awhile ago after a disagreement about content.

Btw, I came very close to moving to Austrailia in 2000. I had all the paperwork done and passed all the requirements, but in the end, my wife shut it down. I think it would have been a good move.
The lack of PMs on this forum, kind of invites thread-jacking.

Shame it use to be a great place (Aus that is) however we seem to have lost a bit of focus these days. Still beats a lot of other places. Mrs Pete and I would move to the south of France but 11 grandkids keep you tied to home. OP isn’t going to be happy when they see the thread drift.

PS you’d have get used to vegimite if you moved here, it’s part of your citizenship.

@Pete_the_painter
South of France would be wonderful. I’d do it in a heartbeat, but my wife won’t leave Canada.
I only have 2 grandsons, but they’re alot of fun.
As for Vegemite, I like it just as much as Marmite but I can’t get it here anymore. I have Vegemite botlles kicking around that I keep things in, for posterity!
Anyway, cheers mate, and I guess we’d better move on before we get deleted.

I think it is a small improvement in clarity that to me was preferable to the sound with the cables apart. Not a huge difference but a worthwhile one considering the cost of the pipe insulation.

Likewise (with my SL2’s). That said, I’ve got a (non-DR) 300 that’s not that far away, so I’ll be able to make a comparison soon.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it did sound pretty good when I tried it. With the recap in 2014, it should be good to go without further servicing until 2029 or so
