282 Recap- indicators?

Hi
When do you know a recap is due on a 282 , its about 12 years old now

No easy answer for this. My 282 is from 2011, so 13 years old. But was still sounding good. But, for a number of reasons i sent mine to Class A for a service. Im now going through the process of burning the 282 in. There is definitely a difference in the sound post service.

I’ve only had my 282 for a short time. It’s a 2003 year model and was serviced by Class A in September 2020 at a cost of £281 inc VAT. The invoice shows full re-cap service and test.
10 x 47uf @40 volt capacitor
19 x 10uf @35 volt capacitor.
It is unclear if this included the NAPSC, but as it includes 2 x insured shipping i think it probably did include it.

Thanks, i have no noticeable degradation in SQ , will check with the Naim folks here in Hong Kong unfortunately the dealer has just changed and the new dealer may likely not have much experience…
I guess if it aint broken dont fix it… my new NDX2 should arrive next week so hoping for an incremental uplift in SQ

Naim do recommend getting it serviced around 12 years of age, so probably could do with being serviced.

I am probably the last person to be giving any advise on this as I purchased my 282 in 2004 and had it serviced in 2022. To be honest I did not detect any fall off in performance before the service until the volume pot went very noisy. So I sent it off to Naim for a good fettle. The job sheet showed:

Replaced logo, volume/balance pots, HDD input relay (whatever that is), tants, axials & applied system automation mod. Tested OK

The job sheet for the NAPSC showed:
No service required, all tested ok.

I did not really notice any change in performance, but the six week turnround time may have affected my audio memory. So seeing the error of my ways and to avoid further issues I will probably have it serviced again about 2034/2035 if nothing breaks before then. The old 32.5 did a sterling job of standing in while the 282 was being serviced.

I am not sure it makes a huge difference to the sound as long as the caps etc. are working OK within spec limits no matter its age.

However, as a buyer of used Naim gear, I do like to go for a serviced unit as it means it has been brought up to spec and should be like new inside.

So unless the unit is developing a fault I do not think anyone will notice a deterioration of sound quality over time. Potentially due to the decline being subtle over the years.

If it’s possible, I guess the best check you can do is to bring your 282 at the dealer and compare with the store demo. Then you could judge yourself the delta, if any.

I forgot to mention that i am also using the 282 with a relatively newer 2017 HICAP DR so not sure if this changes the basic premise of the 282 recap question .

Basically, no.

The Hi-Cap also has its own service schedule.

See FAQ for further information and using the search function for servicing would be helpful.

Two separate things. The hicap service is much nore critical.
My dealer in the UK said most naim nacs dont really see much benefit from a service. Unless they are say 30 years old. Power amps and power supplies then yes.

Thanks , given the hicap is relatively new i wont bother for now!
