I have one fetish Maxi Vinyl extended Version of Phil Collins‘ In the Air Tonight of the Late 80s, 88 perhaps that has been Sounding amazing ever since I first played it on my dad‘s Dual turntable, Sansui amp and Marantz speakers, then REGA P3 and Naim Nait 5i with the phono preamp of my old Arcam Alpha 9…
Nr 2 is The Dark Side of the Moon „Time“.
Nr 3 is Jean-Michel Jarre „Les Concerta en Chine“ same set-ups.
I bought one in mid 1985 to go with the rest of my Technic’s Separate’s System, they were very good back in their day and also boosted the output of the amp, which was an added bonus to tweaking the sound how you liked it.
The Brothers In Arms 40th Anniversary Set is great. I found it on Quobuz and the original and the adjacent live sets are all outstanding. You can also get it on vinyl and CD. And this new version is true to the original lyric and does not censor “That little faggot has his own jet airplane” the way other recent Dire Straits reissues did.
I remember fitting a graphic equaliser to my Ford Cortina to amplify the Panasonic cassette player. Also added speakers to the door panels. The sound did improve from something pretty poor to a little less poor. But as an 18 year old I thought it was great.
I had a crappy Philips tape machine into some pretty ordinary speakers in my car. I decided to rip it all out and put in a massive Motorola 8 track system with amp and huge speakers. The result was truly disappointing and my first lesson in hifi, ‘bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better’!
So true. Also leaving tapes in the car with extreme heat in the summer, frost in the winter and high levels of humidity - I ended up with fungi growing in the passenger footwell of the Cortina. Still I had the keys and could drive to where ever I wanted when ever - if I could afford the petrol.
