Best way is just try it, to be fair.
I have and couldn’t hear any difference,
Good to know Dunc👍
My NDX2 is above my pre for burndy reasons
Hi Tim,
For me in my room moving the Titans off the wall allowed them to breathe and show some of the potential the ND555 x 2 555ps could deliver.
The podiums built on this beyond my expectation allowing the Titans to disappear whilst giving a soundstage I’d never experienced with a close to wall speaker.
The speed and micro detail still makes me smile giving some, for me, of the qualities I like of activation, but from a passive system.
The bass is deep, tuneful and has unrestricted speed, albeit exciting the wall.
The presentation is effortless and transparent, but I feel there is more to come with some room treatment, moving the Titans closer to the wall in my opinion will shut that down.
I guess your heart Tim is set on a speaker change, which I totally understand, but it can be disrupting and expensive justifying a bargain that really hasn’t worked to ones liking.
Good luck in your journey & take care in these times.
Please give my regards to Pete, great bloke.
Russ
NDX2 is the obvious weak point in my system, so maybe a 555PSDR would be better in readiness for the ND555.
I tried rearranging the plugs on my power block to various forum recommendations to no avail. I’m a bit new to all this but I’m beginning to think it’s best to plug it all in and just sit back and enjoy it. I’m just not up for the micro adjustments, time will tell.
That’s some significant upgrades, have fun.
I shouldn’t worry, you can try things for yourself and some might make a difference to you, others not. I do think you can get completely taken in with it all and start thinking this and that.
But the main thing, things like this is all about unwanted noise, and how that efforts your system, some systems are more prone to it, but its not like its going to add say an extra drum beat or note, but it can help to reveal the track better, and so help you the listener hear things more clearly. But we are talking very small differences, if at all any, as the mind is also very good at tricks.
The greenhouse pictures are getting smaller.
Go on… you know you want that 500DR…
As long as its not a sign off the speakers needing to be smaller lol
I baled out of here for a bit as (a) had a mad busy, stressful week with work and other things (spent Sunday evening drafting a response to a sneaky local planning application, after spending Saturday preparing for a trustees’ meeting and also squeezing in about 8 hours work for clients over the weekend oh and power washing the patio (b) there was a bit too much comment from people scoffing at the 808s in my room (fortunately I know a couple of people offline who have 808s who were very kind and encouraging in their comments via email / Facebook etc) © what my wife will amazingly and graciously allow idiotic old me to have is not the business of anybody on here (apart from the bantz as my children would say)
Anyway, over the weekend they sounded terrible boomy and unpleasant (with a bit of volume on, but still nicely balanced at low volume) but I plugged in the demo superlumina speaker cable that Pete had thoughtfully () left and, with a few more hours use (up to around 80 in total I think), today the sound has leapt up to another level. Also managed a bit of lp12 time (been mostly nd555) - and with the outrageous amount I have just spent on that (20 years of upgrades in one go) that is sounding excellent also. So feeling pleased this evening. Pete will also nip in for a bit of socially distanced and fumigated move of the 808s a bit further from the wall (currently 4.5 inches and we can go another 4-5 inches without sticking out beyond the front of the racks after they move to the right)
Well i hope it all comes together for you, but if not, its not really a problem and you still have the SL2’s to fall back on, and thats not a bad place to be, is it.
Linn lp12’s are just a mind field for upgrades, as bad as Naim lol, but its only money and as long as you can afford it, why jot, life is too short
Thanks for the update…just keep focused and listen with your own ears…the forum is a great place, but not for your personal decisions. All the best.
Tim, glad to hear things seem to be coming together. I am sure Pete will get the 808s singing.
One person’s minefield is another person’s menu.
What ever way you look at it, its still a minefield lol, but a great example of product evolution
Had to power off due to planned power cut so no listening today…
See you later!
Maybe worth slipping the SL2’s back in for a comparison now you have some time on the Titans? You could always run the streamer over night giving some much needed hours on the speakers? Run them loud when you are out also maybe? I used both those tricks to burn in some ATC’s recently. Sped up the process a bit.
Hoping to make the final decision tomorrow after Pete has been to change the positioning of the 808s. He deliberately placed them closer to the wall than they should ideally be, so as to minimise the assault on my wife’s senses. So tomorrow morning he is coming to move them out a few more inches and then I will have a few hours to decide.
The aim to decide tomorrow is not from any pressure from Pete - more from my wife to get the order in and room finished before Christmas. Hmmm. Have checked with electrician but not got a date yet for him to come re the spur so I could yet be in trouble
Order placed for a pair of walnut 808s, hopefully arriving before Christmas. Sounding very good now moved out a few more inches
And naughty Pete is going to bring me a dem 500 with them , and arrange so we have two racks of full fraim, each four high (currently have 7 levels of full fat in light cherry and 6 fraim light in darker cherry), though one shelf on each will be medium height, to the right of the right speaker. Keeping the melco to the left of the left speaker, away from the main electronics
In return for his naughtiness Pete is being very good about letting me continue to use the superlumina speaker cable while taking in my naca5 as part of the trade in deal
Very pleasingly, after moving rug and sofas and the speakers, we have the right hand speaker cable not showing in front of the fireplace which will please Helen - it is routed under the left speaker out and then back under the right one (running under the rug left to right). So looking all much neater
Just need the electrician in the next three weeks now or I will be in trouble for making Christmas difficult
