552 display

The lights on my 552 are not lighting up (the volume/balance and inputs) and the remote is not moving the volume. (The Naim label wedge is lit up and it plays fine.)

I have powered down and tried pressing the display on the remote but nothing doing….

Any thoughts?

Gary

It sounds like the remote needs a new battery.

Yes, I just tried a new one to rule that out but thanks HH

Press ‘Pre’ and than ‘Disp’?

Are you 100% sure the remote is working? It sounds very much like it’s not.

But that doesn’t explain the volume not working.

It was working fine, it is possible I pressed the display button on the remote by mistake just odd that the lights are out at the same time the remote is not working

I did try pre and disp but no joy

Gary - With the 552 powered down, check the SNAIC5 cable between the 552 PS and head unit is ok. Unplug at each end then plug back in. How old is the 552 ?

It’s an early version but was DR’d and serviced c3 years ago by Naim.

I did do a rebuild at the weekend and then had a power cut when I was at work ergo a forced switch off…. But it was ok after both those events and still plays fine. Just remote not working and no lights

Ill give your suggestion a whirl

As James advises, check the SNAIC 5 between the NAC552 and 552PS. But just be sure you only do this when it’s powered down. Could be a good to just undo and then remake both the SNAIC and the Burndy connection. If no joy, try substituting the SNAIC with another one.

If the remote is a Flash, it’s worth remembering that you need to snap the last battery in really quickly, otherwise it may well not work. Of course, it may be the wire….

Thanks Richard, I’ll give that a whirl.

HH no flash remote just standard one.

No, still no joy and I don’t have a spare snaic to eliminate that as the issue.

At least it still plays so thankful for small mercies….

I’ll try an overnight power down and review in the morning

Sound like a plan. If no joy then your friendly local dealer should be able to substitute cables and 552PS to help find the issue. Good luck :crossed_fingers:

Thanks James, my dealer is away at the moment but yes, getting assistance from the excellent Basically Sound is the fall back plan!

To test if the remote is working, load up your camera on your phone, point the remote at it, while looking at the screen press any button on the remote.

The ir bit on the remote will flash, your camera phone will pick this up (eyes alone don’t)

If there’s no flashing then it’s new remote time/batteries

Top tip, I had seen that done before but forgot about it….thanks for reminding me.

Good news is two flashing red lights which suggests the remote and batteries are fine.

So the problem is with my 552 or I have pressed something on the remote and disabling something.

Gary

Can you get it to go into Program mode at all?

If not, IIRC there’s a way to reset via the front panel buttons that was explained by @NeilS where there was similar issue on a 252;

Switch your power amp(s) off & wait for them to discharge.
Switch your preamp power supply off, switch the preamp supply back on with source mute on the (552) held down. This will reset the (552) back to default.

See whether that gets things back to normal.

I think my 552 has some issues, in edition to no lights except the Naim wedge and remote not working I played some vinyl last night and it sounded broken, really muffled.

Bummer……
