Hi Peter. I was wondering how this reflection manifested itself, and what the foam remedied? I didn’t realise such minor objects had an effect. Thanks
Hi TT, well a certain high frequency say on guitar riffs ( playing a great deal of Blues) simply created a tiz in my right ear and yes with wifey’s help doing the mirror test, it turned out that there was a straight line between the left channel tweeter onto the door handle and into my right ear.
The wool dressing of said door handle simply attenuated the lift. You can of course choose to believe, that I’ve gone a bit doolally with age and that’s perfectly alright, as long you don’t call me Batman Oh yes, this mad old hobby…. Best Peter
Thanks for that. Nope, if you heard it then it’s real! I don’t doubt it. I’d like to say I have such efficient ears but that would be a lie.
Hi Richard. I’m the member from the other thread that has the marble piece under the NDS. It’s a 1/2" thick 16" x 16" marble floor tile. I have deadened it by sitting it on a 3/4" bamboo board with a rubberized mesh underlay between them. These in turn sit on three medium-soft rubber balls, so it’s fairly isolated as well. I initially had the bamboo board on top, because of the metal feet on the NDS, but the sound was not bright enough, so I swapped them, and it actually seems to sound better now.
I am also using ‘fill-in’ power supplies just now. I will be moving house in a few years which will have a completely different set up, so I won’t be purchasing any audio kit or furnishings in the meantime. I very much look forward to obtaining the properly designed power supplies for my Naim gear, as I know that the sound will improve dramatically, and it’s already quite good.
At the moment, my audio setup is designed around my furnishings, whereas in our new place, we will be arranging things much more to accommodate the speakers and sound distribution.
I really appreciate your comments regarding the NDS placement, and I’ll try a few things in the meantime to see if there’s an improvement.
ATB, and cheers.
Dave
Vicoustic Flexi wall might work for you, I have several in my room. Behind my speakers and at first reflection points.
From my perspective, I’ve not found a set of Focals that I liked with Naim gear, as I generally found them too bright. It could be that the ones I heard were not run in, but for a system that is bright with Focals in, that would be my first thought.
So I would at least play around with speaker positioning, and the simple room treatments - just a piece of art printed on canvas can help - to see if it helped. I’d then demo some alternative speakers.
But I would also demo what you had previously - I suspect you may find now it’s less good than you remember it. Some of the benefits of the newer system are most obviously realised when you go back, often. But also be aware that when you try a non DR version again, if you prefer it, there is no problem with going back to that. Better isn’t measured in the £/$/€ you spend, but on what works with your room, your tastes in music and your ears.
is the other speaker as close to the other wall? It could be that the problems are coming from the expanse of flat wall behind the stove. The circular stovepipe will be a diffuse reflector, the side of the stove has to go to the back wall and back to you and will be quite attenuated by then, and the front part is relatively small (not to rule it out but still…) If it’s possible can you put soft furnishings on the reflection points on the wall, if they won’t get too hot because of the fire/stovepipe?
Alternatively, if you’re sitting in the centre with the fireplace sticking out into your line of listening, can you shift your listening position across to the left some, so that the stove isn’t so prominently in the line of fire (as it were)?
Reflection, or a resonance of the handle or something it is connected to? I would suspect the latter rather than the former, unless there is other evidence.
Thanks NQ, I’ll take a look. I’ve found GIK do a hinged panel, too.
Thanks for the thoughts and analysis, X. The other speaker is about 8" further from wall - balanced on the side you can see, somewhat, by the depth of the window near the speaker. I’ve tried panels at the first reflection points before but they didn’t seem to do an awful lot. I’ll pop them back in when back has improved. I can’t shift my listening position, unfortunately.
I see your system in the systems pics in 2019, on your profile. Don’t know if it’s the same now. If you still have the glasses behind the speakers and on the left, have you tried to remove them and see if it changes something?
I hear you IB, the *Power of suggestion *should never be overlooked …. ATB Peter
Hmm I can’t find my own system pics! I don’t think I’ve ever had glasses behind speakers? There is a big mirror on front wall between speakers, which probably doesn’t help…
Ah - found them, thanks FR. It’s not dissimilar to how it is now and I think you are referring to the mirror and picture. Yes, I’ve thought about taking the mirror out and reviewing the impact and will try it. But just now I can’t lift a teabag so will have to wait a bit…

Sorry, I was meaning mirrors
I really think you’ve got a great system and it would a shame to change the core sonic signature that you have enjoyed so much in the past. However the additional information being unearthed by your new kit needs a bit tuning. Before changing the speakers I would look at changing the speaker cable (which I’ve always considered a tone control) or try a couple of acoustic panels behind the speakers to take the edge off. . . What speaker cable are you using?
Hello Peter - is this post for me? I’m using Tellurium Q Black speaker cable (the mk 1 version, not the mk 2).
Yes it is. I was addressing your original post rather the subsequent dialogue. A friend of mine also uses TQ cables. Personally I really like NAC A5. I like it’s neutrality and as naim kit is voiced with this and Focal speakers I happy they’ve done the extensive listening for me. My amp is a dr NAP300 driving a pair of Sopra’s (via NAC A5) The sound is incredibly realistic, but definitely not hard. I play a fair amount of ZEP, Stones, AC/DC and FLOYD. . .
That’s good cable and very compatible. I can’t see why you’d think of changing it. Have you thought any more about getting a non glass stand?
It’s probably better that he does the ‘towel’ test before considering an alternative stand
