A Naim departure?! I'd prefer not... amplifier advice pls

Hi @Wusplay your thoughts on the Gryphon Diablo 300 would be most welcome. I’m concerned that whilst it is an excellent amp, it would almost be too much of a step up in my system (with Naim NDX2 and Focal Kanta 2).

Because I’m a fan of Gryphon, my assessments tend to be too subjective for purchase decisions.

Understand. I will go and listen for myself in the next few weeks.

If you do not require a built in phono then I recommend putting the Lejonklou Boazu 2 on your list. I used an NDX 2 with the Boazu 1.3 and Boazu 2 and it sounded very good with both amps. The Boazu 1.3 actually replaced a SN2 I had been using for a few years. No frills, just remarkably musical.

I recently had a chance to hear top of the line Luxman separates driving Revival Audio Atalante 5’s. The owner was selling the 5’s and upgrading to the 7 evo’s. I was interested and took my Boazu 2 along for the ride. After listening to the Luxman setup, which sounded great, we switched to the Boazu. My host was a bit surprised, to say the least.

Thanks, I have not seen them available here in Thailand, but will keep a look out.

Many options here. If considering the Gryphon Diablo 300 it is best if you can try it in your own system with the Focal Kanta 2 and compare it with the Supernait 3. I suspect it would be a great match if heft and bass punch and presence are top priorities, or if you are looking for an overall fuller sound with improved bass definition. The Diablo 300 sounds noticeably better than the 282/250DR on my Marten Duke 2s. Music just flows out freely and effortlessly from the speakers as it all sounds unforced, while there is a forced quality with the Naim separates. I believe the Gryphon has better drive than the 282/250DR.

It’s only with certain speakers the Naim will shine, in my experience. Lazy sounding speakers such as Harbeth and Graham. The Graham LS5/9 still sounds better with the 282/250DR than Gryphon Diablo 300 although I just briefly hooked the speakers up to the Gryphon to have a listen. My main system is now the Gryphon/Marten. The Naim amps and Graham speakers are kept in a corner as spares.

Yes to that. Thank you for your comments.

Hi Graeme,

Moon also use an analogue preamp, if keeping vinyl in the analogue domain is important to you.

I tried both a Linn Klimax and Select Edition Hub and their digital phono/preamp sections were a noticeable step down on vinyl replay from my 552.

Cheers,

Ian

Have you heard the Källa streamer in use with the latest Boazu? Wondering how it compares with the NDX2.

To add the results of testing DC offset at the amp’s speaker terminals: Right channel is 23mV and left is 44mV. Have reported to Naim and waiting for feedback.

One of the best things you can do for mains cleanliness is convert your house to TT mains if you are currently PME (ie TN-S or TN-C-S)

This usually more effective than setting a dedicated spur with its own circuit breaker etc (according to family professionals in the business). You could do both - but I would start with TT mains.

This is all about cleaning your ground/earth and not strapping your earth to the common shared neutral on your utility distribution. A noisy earth as you might likely get on PME will likely affect single ended hifi - such as much of the Naim products.

I converted to TT for other mains quality reasons and was pleasantly surprised at the improvement to my hifi. (all cliches apply - inky blacks, fine detail etc) . My hifi is on one of my mains rings.

Just a thought - it worked for me on my rural village over head electricity supply

My Solar/battery system was installed with an earth rod for off-grid operation should there be a power cut. Most of the day electricity is supplied by the battery which charges overnight, drawing little or no power from the grid. Would than in effect result in TT earthing?

I think the NDX2 is an excellent streamer, but I prefer the Kalla. To me the Kalla is more musical and balanced due to less emphasis on lower frequencies versus the NDX2. This is a personal and subjective preference.

The Kalla lacks some useful features offered by the Naim streamers. Specifically, the Kalla cannot be used as a stand alone DAC or linked to other streaming devices via Airplay.

There is a recent discussion on the Lejonklou forum of a new streamer called the Tjarn. Seems like it will be priced around 5000 USD versus 8500 USD for Kalla.

The inverter earth rod electrode is only activated when you are fully isolated from the mains and running from battery - ie when in a power cut and your flip the isolators and you fully isolate your supply from the utility supply or your system automatically does it.

Usually one is not permitted to put a local earth electrode on your supply if PME supply enabled and connected. (There are exceptions for physically separated outbuildings, static caravans, etc where each building has its own TT setup - but the main property with utility feed is PME) This is because if there is a fault in the utility supply this could cause an explosion or fire in your house or the supply wire to your house.

In the installation instructions for batteries that can run in full isolation mode from the mains - you need to ascertain whether you have PME or TT already enabled - as the installation is slightly different.

Your house could be converted to TT prior to installation to make it simpler - but you will get a certificate and conductivity readings for this as provided by a certified electrician. Depending on ground conductivity you may require several dispersed earth electrodes

It was easy for me as I already had TT

Normally when running off a battery you are connected to the mains utility and using PME, even though your inverter is matching the power draw.

So no this is not the same as general TT earthing. But in a power cut and fully disconnected from grid it is TT earthing.. albeit your mains could be slightly noisier itself due to the inverter function of creating the sine wave. Inverters can be noisy, though they have significantly improved in recent years.

What does even mean? Are you in the UK?

Martin

Many thanks for this explanation. I kind of expected it would only be TT when the mains supply is disconnected.

I have a Tesla PW3 and Backup 2 Gateway which detects mains outages and automatically switches to the home backup mode. I can also go Off-grid via the app, so I might just try this to see if I can hear a difference .

Thanks again.

I am in the UK - but these are international mains IEC earthing terms

Fredrik posted more information regarding the Tjarn on the Lejonklou forum yesterday.

add the new Moon 371 to the list.

I recently spent an hour or so listening to the D’Agostino entry level power amp ($28k-ish, so cheaper than a 500DR).

It was phenomenal, coming very close to a $90k Goldmund amp I compared it with and outstripping a $20k Luxman amp also in the comparison.

The aesthetics of the D’Agositino are visually arresting, but possibly in a good way.
