A Newbie asks......Which to use.. Nait 5 or Nac112/Nap150?

I always wanted to have, what i would call a 'higher end vintage system". So i dipped my toe into this world by buying a Nait5, Linn Basik turntable and Spendor speakers, and i was happy with the sound compared to my old setup. So i joined your community, did a miniscule amount of research, didn’t ask for advice, and jumped into the deep end without a lifebelt, and i can’t swim !!
I bought at auction a system comprising a Flatcap 2, CD5, NAT5, NAC112 and 2 NAP150’s, along with the Nait 5 that i already had. It all arrived without power cables or interconnects or SNAICs.
So i’ve spent the last 2 weeks or so buying power cables and interconnects and poring over the forum and probably getting information overload.
I contacted Naim and non of the units have any service history, and the CD5 shows ERR when you load a CD.
So as i will be taking some of the units to Class A in Sheffield to get serviced, my question to you in this long winded tale of woe, is… Do i go with

  Flatcap -> Nait5
  Flatcap -> Nait5 -> NAP150
  Flatcap -> NAC112 -> NAP150

I don’t know what advantage i would get using the NAP150 with the Nait5?
I think the CD is probably a lost cause, i’ve hooked up my Denon temporarily, but i may use the tuner later…
Whatever i have left i would probably sell, although i could use them as a secondary system upstairs.

Thanks for reading this far without falling asleep. I really hope you knowledgable folks can help me out

The last one. 112/150.

Welcome!

The NAT will be a head office job regarding service. (I had my NAT05 done there a couple of years ago.)

I agree with Robert, pre power is the way to go. Sell the rest to fund the servicing of those boxes you intend to keep. Happy days!

Listen to the fc/112/150 and then listen to the Nait5 on its own. Choose which you prefer.
I don’t think the nait 5 is going to be any better than the fc/112/150 whatever you add to it.
For me the fc/112/150 would be my choice.

Edit. I have had both a Nait5i, which I still have, and the fc/112/150.

The original Nait 5 is a fantastic amp, I would have this over a 112/150.
Also the Nait 5 is probably well over 20 years old, service the Nait and enjoy.

Not sure if you’ve hand your hands on an original Nait 5 as its completely different to the Nait 5i series that followed. If the OP has the original Nait he’s in luck as its superb and well worth a service.

Fair enough. I don’t have any experience of the original Nait 5.

Yes it is Nait 5. I read a few threads where people were using it with the NAP150

And twenty years ago, this is what some Nait 5 owners might have done. Then added a NAC202 or NAC282 instead of the Nait 5. Then maybe added a HC. Then maybe a NAP200 or NAP250 instead of the NAP150, and so on…

(But they were young then. These days, it’s all they can manage if they get out of bed in the mornings and manage to put their slippers on the correct foot :wink: )

As will the CD5.

From a recent factory tour, I got the impression that Naim’s attitude to non-runners is that ‘we will always have a look at it…’

Yes, but Class A won’t.

When I saw the OP’s comment about the Err message on the CD5’s display, I was pessimistic. Hence my only comment about servicing any of his five series stuff was that the NAT would be a head office job.

I spoke to Darren at Class A, i think after reading this thread and others i will be taking the FC, 112 and 150 to get serviced. I suppose i could contact Naim to see if there is any life in the CD5 and NAT
Thanks all for the advice. it is appreciated
