Really? I am surprised. Not my experience in Europe, or even in Africa.
You can always get another from a machine at the airport if you needed of course. With just your passport. You wouldn’t need your phone.
It is 18 months since I have flown, so maybe a paper boarding pass won’t be needed now. I agree the passport should be all you need, but having it printed out was definitely needed 2 years ago in a small regional airport in Turkey.
