A problem with Sinatra or is it just my brain?

Exactly.

I forgot to mention I’m usually drinking a few Gin and Tonics while listening to him

Isn’t a martini and cigarette in hand prerequisite to listening to a crooner? Perhaps a cardigan or velvet jacket as well?
Not to detract from Sinatra, but Bing was probably a more pitch perfect crooner. I was 14 yo when I saw this Christmas show. Still remember being blown away by the beauty of Bing’s duet with Bowie. Two polar opposites harmonizing wonderfully.https://youtu.be/lBVrwKXZHQc

There are a couple of interesting videos on YouTube.

The first analyses Sinatra’s voice, and shows graphically that his pitch is almost spot on. As good as it gets, according to the presenter.
It seems to show he sometimes sings very slightly off, but he isn’t simply singing a note, he’s gliding up and down, which makes it more difficult to be perfect.

Maybe it’s the gliding up and down that makes you feel seasick. :grinning:

The second video compares Sinatra’s pitch accuracy to Martins pitch accuracy.
Martin is consistently flat. The presenter suggests it’s intentional, and enhances the perception that Martin has a relaxed singing style.

At the end of the first video, the presenter suggests that when Sinatra sings off pitch, it’s intentional and doesn’t sound wrong, even though it is off pitch.

I personally don’t have any objections to people singing off pitch, although I think singing consistently off pitch is the key.

Although, the above is only true with respect to one song.

Paul Rogers (Free, Bad Company) got a great bluesy feel by singing flat sometimes. Reaching but not quite getting there.

Thanks for the videos.
The above was my original and only point.

I have an indifferent sense of pitch and so I’ve never noticed anything amiss with Sinatra’s singing. The only singer I can think of whose pitch has bothered me is Sade. When “Your Love Is King” was all over the radio in the 80s, it always struck me as being noticeably flat. That might have been intentional (it could also have been my imagination).

@Corry you should give Sade another try now with your wonderful system! Cheers…

It’s possible that a higher resolution system might make the intonation issue more rather than less distracting! But, to be fair to Ms. Adu, it could be an expressive device rather than a technical shortcoming.

Either way, I’m afraid her first album is permanently tainted for me by its prevalence as mid 80s background music - yuppie wine bars, dinner parties with pretentious people yammering about how much their London flat had appreciated since the start of the year, etc.

My younger brother had just one Beatles record because I’d given it to him, but he had bought Sade’s first. I’ve often wondered if he’s really my sibling.

I find it interesting that you mention this particular artist and track. I have a ‘best of Sade’ CD album, I believe 1984. Full fat WAV RIP to my streamer. This track and her voice sounds absolutely superb on my system. In fact, I’d use it for Demo purposes if required.
