Adding a 2nd PS555 to my NDS

Roon is RAAT so I guess so but haven’t tried so don’t take it as a promise

@simon.pepper Thanks for the detailed response.

I have been using SonoreUPnP for a few years and was perfectly satisfied with the performance with the NDS and main system. The problem came with connectivity with my 3 Musos.

Firstly the NDS cannot offer multi room above 24/48 therefore I had to set that limit on Roon, which was a shame and cobersome when I wanted to listen to higher resolution files.

Secondly there were constant dropouts with the Musos which totally ruined the experience.

As soon as I installed the the NDX5 XS2 all these problems disappeared (with the notable exception of the latest Fw for the Musos breaking the Sync with RAAT). However I am now facing a downgrade in my listening enjoyment which I understand others have experienced with the Fw update for the NDX5 XS2.

What would you say was the difference in the SQ with the second ps?

@Blackbird I will investigate. Thank you. Caveat understood!

Ok, I understand. Can the Musos not be Roon Endpoints on their own?
I run multiroom upstairs in Bedroom, Study and 2 Bathrooms, but these are all Chromecast devices (either Chromecast Audio or built-in Chromecast) and as such can be set up in Roon separately and also grouped as one Zone for complete synchronization.

More of the NDS, just like moving from the NP5XS I had originally after upgrading from the ND5XS to the NDS, better bass definition, better transient, better soundstaging, and better detail. Now it wasn’t immediately obvious, as with the NP5XS → 555DR upgrade, but a much more subtle improvement you noticed on a well known track and thought ‘that sounds better’ or ‘never heard that sound so good before’. But certainly worth it.

Maybe you could keep you current 555 for Socket2 - Analogue and pickup a 555DR for Socket1 - Digital?

It’s a shame Naim don’t provide a dedicated power supply just for the Analogue circuitry. Much of the 555 is for the supply rails for the Digital circuitry, with only the 22v regulators used for the Analogue. Therefore when a 555 is used for Socket2 only much of the circuitry present is not being used and redundant.

@simon.pepper thank you for the detail.

Regading your first point about Roon. It was a workaround, so I used Roon and set it up as a Squeezebox and then used the Naim multi-room. I was experiencing so many dropouts it was unusable. It works perfectly now (expect the F…ng Fw update which renders 1 muso unusable, hopefully Naim will solve this)

Regarding the SQ with a second PS555, that sounds wonderful, however now with the NDX5 XS2 I am worried about getting more ‘glare’ which surprised me. I was thinking about a non DR as they are cheaper and I am not at all sure about the changes to the Naim sound over the years. Given that I have all olives 52 and 135s I am concerned that the DR might introduce something unbalanced in the system, just as the NDX5 XS2 to has.

Roon multiroom will not be in perfect sync if one of the streams uses SPDIF out into a separate DAC as you propose. Obviously this is only a problem if the two players are within earshot of each other, and even then the differences may or may not be big enough to notice.
If this is a problem you may be able to correct it by adding delay to other streamers in the group in Roon settings.

@ChrisSU I use the digital out of the Ndx5 XS2 (what a snappy name!) as native via a coaxial (soon to be DC1) into the digital input of the NDS. They are all in earshot of each other. As you suggested I had a to introduce a slight delay on one of the Musos but now they are all in perfect sync. (except the one with the latest Fw grrrrr which is switched off)

I use a raspberry Pi with squesebox to Upnp software. This allows Roon to stream to all legacy Naim devices simultaneously.

Also it uses the NDS UPNP. Back in the day Naim claimed the NDS was optimised for this source.

I suspected the raspberry Pi is not necessary. It should be possible to run it as a VM on the windows computer running Roon or switch to hosting roon on Linux. I just have not figure out how to do this yet!

The DC 1 is the one to have :sparkles:

Sorry to be a fusspot, but I think you mean ND5XS2.

Oops ! You are very right!

@Richard.Dane I noticed you edited my post.
BTW My Amp is a Sim Audio Moon product, and not a Naim product.
The product supplies I was referring to are a Farad3 supply for the EtherREGEN switch and an AfterDark power supply for the 10MHz OCXO feed to the EtherREGEN switch.

Thanks for clarifying Simon. I just didn’t want anybody thinking you had swapped out the equipment fuses in your Naim equipment for “alternatives” to the Naim supplied ones, which is of course not at all recommended, potentially dangerous, and mention or discussion of which is not permitted here.

I understand that and wouldn’t discuss this here.
