AI - where is it taking us?

They could but the issue there is a widespread refusal to address is that in most cases we’ve no idea how it’s doing what it’s doing and by allowing it to simply accumulate data we’re simply building in or worsening existing biases.

I do love the appropriateness of the kogic here. “If the same thing is said again it makes it true. No explanation, examples, clarity.” Very AI  .

I suspect you are right Innocent, there is indeed huge scope for terrorist organisations to exploit AI to for example engineer a virus that is as infectious as flu, as deadly as ebola and to release it into the wild or just to cause mayhem by using AI tools to hack crucial infrastructure systems.

I must admit to being somewhat concerned about the development of autonomous drones capable of making kill decisions without human control. That’s not too far removed from a Skynet/Terminator movie. We’ve seen how even the relatively primitive drones being operated by Ukraine have proved devastatingly effective. Just imagine what the ones currently being developed in some skunk works in America with a budget of billions will be capable of a few years from now.

I guess there will also be societal changes too in response to robotics. I’m dreaming of the the day DIY and domestic duties can be performed by a robot and I don’t have to paint the hall landing and stairs for example during my precious time off work. How will it impact marriage and human relationships though when you can basically have a replica of your ideal woman or man as a partner? Being able to choose from Brigitte Bardot, Goldie Hawn, Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn and for them to be an expert at cordon bleu cuisine, painting staircases and fixing the car as well as fitting new double glazing would have a lot of appeal I suspect!

Maybe it’s not all bad!!

We call these computer programmes AIs, but they are not intelligent, just very complicated programmes following extremely complicated programming. If and when we develop truly artificial intelligences, who knows what they will be like? At one end of the scale, we could have the malevolent Skylink from the Terminator films, at the other the benevolent Minds from Iain M Banks’ Culture novels. Or something somewhere between where AI are like humans, where some are basically good individuals and some aren’t.

I’m not sure how the physical side of that relationship would be… (I have no desire for silicne!)

BTW, my wife is an expert cook (sorely missed from her place of work), is an expert at vegetable gardening, and she has learnt to decorate including patching plaster, fit skirting, do tiling/grouting, and even re-pointing (properly), and can drill holes nearly straight. However mechanical things are beyond her, as is practical interest in some of my hobbies, including hifi, and she doesn’t share much of my taste in music.

Now if AI enhancement of humans became possible…..

I would perhaps have a friendly and elaborate discussion with you in a pub if I were nearby you or many others, but writing up arguments on a forum is beyond the time I have. I think that applies to others too.

Not sure what that’s in reference to tbh.

Have a look at this thread and try your own forum name. In my case, it summarized the content of threads I have participated in, but completely missed my actual opinion and position in some of the discussions. The dataset available to the AI model is relatively small (Naim forum data mostly) and that’s apparently nowhere near enough to produce any realistic result.

Haha Innocent - I share your aversion to silicone!!

Sounds like your missus is a very capable lady indeed! I feel fortunate to have made a similarly good choice and after 28 years together we’re still happy and I still miss her whenever work takes me away. She didn’t complain at all that I was giving the 350’s a good thrashing yesterday evening for a couple of hours. I actually managed to warm them up quite nicely!

We are fortunate in having two lounges, and although there a door directly between it is triple glazed and has external quality sealing, so except with exceptionally loud playing music n one doesn’t disturb TV in the other, and moderate playing (which my wife would call loud) doesn’t disturb quiet time, and vice versa. I pity people living in open plan homes.

Despite my VI I once tried to help with some drilling as one of the weird side effects of my vision is that I can tell whether something is straight far better than anyone without a VI.

After my first attempt was off by really not very much the drill was unceremoniously taken off me and I was advised that “… if you can’t drill straight then you can’t drill at all.”

Worth a read.

Fascinating and terrifying in equal measure.

But is it? It’s getting hard to tell now.

Guess how I made that image…

Although LLM systems are not AI in the proper sense of the word, we are almost there. And it will be a mighty tool for the sociopaths that currently rule us. Probably too late anyhow, as humanity experiences a waking up.

I would trade up all modern technology for more empathy for one another.

I almost agree - i.e. bar good hifi (but not tweakery), e-MTB, combioven air-fryer, hearing aids, and quite a bit of health related testing and diagnostic equipment.oh, and maybe telephones (without huge call costs for long distances), and radio - but I’m not sure how far back you’d go in saying modern?
