AirPlay Apple Music issues

Hi there ! Hope you’re fine.
I have an issue with streaming AirPlay from my IPhone or iPad. Whenever I start airplaying from Apple Music it starts but after few seconds stops playing. When switching to iPhone it is keep on playing and then to uniti again it plays and stops again. Like it freezes. Has anyone else noticed similar issues?

I did not find Apple Music Airplay to be reliable. I found Qobuz with the Naim app to work better.

Probably but I have a subscription for AM and Qobuz would be another service to pay that I don’t need honestly. Id like it to work as it should be.

I also had this issue when air-playing from an old iPhone to my iMac. The issue was resolved by hardwiring said iPhone to the iMac with a lightning cable. I realise this is not true ‘airplay’ and may not suit your use but it works for me! When not hardwired it would play for 2-3 seconds then just stop.

I trued it with my iPhone 16PM. Works fine. However you are limited to CD quality. No high resolution.

I found AirPlay 2 on a WiiM Pro connected to my SuperUniti mostly reliable. But, Apple Music sounds notably better and is rock solid if I connect an oldish iPad Mini via Lightning to a Dragonfly Red connected to my SU. Not so convenient but I do like the Apple Classical app.

Does anyone know of a better way to stream Apple Music high res to a Naim device?

@ChrisByrd I don’t think it is possible to stream Apple Music High Res. I think it is all CD quality. I don’t think you can stream lossless.

@Jaybar Theoretically you can stream up to 24-bit 192kHz with a wired connection - the Dragonfly Red shows it’s getting a 48kHz or 96kHz signal (its maximum) on tracks marked as High res Lossless in AM.

The older Naim streamers like the SuperUniti had the pre-AirPlay certification that allowed you to wire your iDevice directly to the USB port and play from there.

Within the app, you could select this input and play a local track. The hack was then to start a local track playing on your iPhone or iPad via the Naim app, then switch over to the connected device screen and change the audio to play whatever you wanted. It’s been a long while, but I’m pretty sure this will still work for you via the Apple Music or Apple Classical streaming apps. As you say, these both output high res over the wire, so if you’re seeing this on your Dragonfly , you’ll see it on the SU USB….

Apple lossless can be ‘streamed’ via a direct wired connection of an Apple device.

I believe that the Eversolo streamers have an Apple Music app that allows lossless and high res streaming. You could connect such a device to your Naim kit.

Using Airplay will always be a sonic compromise.

Thanks, I tried the hack and it does work still and sounds very good. Only problem is the SU sometimes doesn’t recognise the iPad when connected, so I’ll experiment.

I have been looking at the Eversolo streamers, also aconsidering t an update to my DragonFly Red that will allow up to 192 kHz.

I’m beginning to wonder whether Apple Music is worth the trouble. I’m finding the new Spotify lossless sounds almost as good through my WiiM Pro and there’s always Qobuz or Tidal. I’ve got 3 months to decide.
