Carpets will make a massive improvement to the sound. I purchased two marble chopping boards from B&M or Wilko, or perhaps even eBay; I cannot remember, but I am sure that you will find the soundstage changed. I found the sound to be better controlled, with improvement at the lower end
In my view, larger spikes will make little difference if the room is the issue.
