An alcohol free life

I find the alcohol free wheat beers like Erdinger Alkoholfrei Low Alcohol Wheat Beer the best but I’m yet to taste any low alcohol/alcohol free beer that comes anywhere near a proper pint for taste or even a bottle of Irn Brew tbf.

Don’t forget sugar. I guess that’s part of alcohol, too. Over doing sugar and salt leads to many serious illness.
I can’t drink alcohol due to my allergy but hard time quitting salt! Sugar is equally sinister but much easier to quit than salt!

Interesting timing.

I struggle to see how anyone can use underearning to control how they feel, though undoubtedly that may affect how someone feels and may control what someone can do!

Though alcohol is made from sugar, sugar is not part of alcohol - however some alcoholic drinks also contain sugar (and some far more than others), but perhaps that’s what you meant?

I stopped alcohol 30 years ago. But been addicted since 30 years on sugar . No diabetic, no cholesterol, fortunately. A little belly excess.
I find it difficult to stop creams, cakes….

I’ve been alcohol free for 15 years now, I went out for a Christmas drink a couple of weeks after my 50th birthday with a group of mates and it got a bit messy, got home went straight to bed and woke in the early hours for a toilet visit lost my balance (still drunk) hit my head on the door frame and bingo paralysed from the neck down.
Back up and about after about 6 months after the accident but been left with more issues than I care to mention so just gave up on the alcohol from that point onwards and to be honest I can’t say that I’ve ever really missed it.

Spot on, more and more people are living longer with declining quality of life.. and this puts a huge burden on our health services and families… unfortunate but a real dilemma. Mrs SinS works exactly in this space for the NHS and her frustration is extreme sometimes in regard to the extent that some people are kept alive and expected to be kept alive beyond their optimum life span… and that in itself can have real negative health aspects to families and relations as well as misery to the individual… and can be appalling and cruel way to approach the end of one’s life.
There is too much taboo about death, and our approaches are increasingly regressive and sometimes cruel… although the assisted dying bill may help, I just hope it doesn’t become too bureaucratic to use for the regular citizen.

Indeed alcohol is ethanol. No sugar in ethanol obviously, but many drinks and foodstuffs including some alcoholic drinks contain high levels of sugars which can be as equally bad for you in quantity as metabolising ethanol.

Guinness Zero is excellent. Lucky Saint is probably my go to low alcohol beer, they have 3 varieties now. The blue bottle/cans are probably my favourite but the yellow coloured cans with a lemon flavouring are extremely refreshing in the heat eg when gardening.

I tried a few low alcohol gin varieties a few years ago and wasn’t that keen to be honest, one of the big problems I hadn’t thought of was a fairly short ‘shelf life’ once opened due to the lack of alcohol - at least the ones I tried went off fairly quickly. If they no longer do so I assume there’s some kind of preservative I probably don’t want.

I assumed posters mentioning sugars were referring to residual sugars in the drinks which can vary quite considerably as I’m sure you know - not a big fan of drier sherry for some reason (unlike white wine) but the amount of residual sugar in certain varieties is frightening.

Yes I was referring to added sugars in foodstuffs and some soft and alcoholic drinks.
Many sugars like many things are dangerous to one’s health in quantity, moderation is key.
I was referring to unfermented sugars from grapes etc, it clearly that is a source of sugar that in volume is not going to be good for your health.

I religiously avoid low fat/0% fat products as so many have added sugar/salt to make them more palatable.

Indeed.. and it just goes to support my earlier post about UPFs .. there is increasing awareness of the harm they can do over time to one’s health…
So that’s why with most things, and as we say in our family, moderation and variation is key to what we drink and eat (none of us smoke)..

Well I’ve just examined the bottle. It says to keep it in the fridge and use it within two months. It’s also stuffed with flavourings and multiple preservatives. So basically it’s full of crap. We will drink this bottle now we have it but certainly won’t be buying any more. It’s such a shame.

It really is a shame, if there’s limited shelf life once opened they’d be better off selling much smaller bottles potentially with fewer preservatives but I suspect the marketing teams wouldn’t go for that as they want to match the ‘proper article’.

I’m not a big spirit drinker but at least the full alcohol versions keep for years if not decades.

Mrs Ac got me one of those earlier this year - must use it more often.

Talking about sugar..
I used to be a milk and two sugars in my tea and coffee
I haven’t had this sugar addition for some 20 years now. Along with a keen eye on sodium of course.

I meant that the alcohol can raise your blood sugar levels. Beer = carbohydrates = sugar
