Managed to get hold of a beautiful aro tonearm to replace my Ittok going into 82, hicap, 250, shahinian arcs
I have a prefix k (linn connector) in my LP12 Armageddon (hicapped) which I want to continue using so I need some advice on options to get the missing link (aro) up and running
I have the aro armlead and small connector but unsure what to do for the best?
As the Aro connector is now unobtainium, it sounds like you will need to remove the Linn connector off the Prefix and the Aro connector off the armlead, and then solder the latter onto the Prefix. It may be best to find a dealer who is adept at doing such a job. There are Naim dealers in the UK who are very well versed in the ways of the Prefix and the LP12 (Peter Swain and Colin Macey are but two, but many more), so I would contact your nearest Naim dealer and see what they can do for you.
Nice system Chris. Ittok is great, but an Aro should make a fundamental difference to your listening pleasure. Good luck with finding a dealer and enjoy the results.
Thanks for the reply. I reached out to Peter he has no more stock of aro plugs and advised against butchering the original aro armlead as they are like hen’s teeth to get hold of. Had to sell my Ittok to recover funds so am armless now may keep an eye on the usual sources for a prefix or fingers crossed a spare plug.
Had to get the aro in my hands the rest should hopefully be easier?
Yes, as mentioned the bodies are no longer available for the arm board plug but it is possible to push the pins from the body, that means you can fit the body back to those pins on the ARO arm lead if necessary if you move on from Prefix in the future.
I have a few pins left as in the arm plug kit that was used to be a spare pin due to the difficult nature of soldering the arm wires to the pin. I have collected these over the years which means that it fitted to the Prefix it would be possible to swap over the plastic plug body.
I hope above makes sense as I’m dictating this post in Shimla Northern India,
Yes those Aro leads are rare! Perhaps you could put out a feeler elsewhere with regard to the availability of an Aro compatible prefix. You may get lucky IYKWIM.
The Prefix is excellent and it would be a shame not to use it. I’d take option 1. You can do it now and it is free, so long as you have a suitable soldering iron and the necessary skills. Presumably you have the necessary arm board; I can’t recall whether it comes with the Aro.
Aro arm-boards are made by Linn so no problem on supply if required. Aro plugs virtually impossible without destroying an arm cable as a donor. Hence the route I suggested
Hi Peter, I am confused by your post, which seemed to me to suggest there is a way for the OP to do it, removing the body from the arm lead and connecting it to the Prefix. But I don’t need to understand!!
Yes leaning heavily towards option 1 as I do not need the armlead and am unlikely to use anything else other than the prefix which I intend to supercap when funds allow. BTW the correct aro (linn) armboard came with the arm plus ALL accessories and boxes
I have a solution but all you need to know to avoid your confusion is spare pins. A very limited number and I’m not touting for business here as I can just about help Chris out of the situation he is in.
Regards Peter, ( Currently riding in a taxi in New Delhi India)
Hi Peter, you’re right I should do it cleanly if possible and leave the pins on the aro lead just in case reversal is required. Have a great rest of your holiday I’ll hold fire
Thanks Chris, I was pretty sure my Aro came with the arm board, but it was a long time ago. Good luck with lifting the stylus from the lock groove after a few too many glasses of wine.
Once you are used to the Aro I find that lifting it accurately into position is never a problem - even after glasses of wine. Never bothered with the Aromatic either.
