Hi, I have a library of flac files on a NAS and Minimserver 2.2 running ok on there.
I have a NAIM streamer with it’s own control point app.
I also have a Bluesound box which has it’s own way of indexing the content etc (i.e. it does not use Minim).
I use JRiver on my pc which also has it’s own database.
Artwork is embedded in each music file (there may be the odd missing one), some albums may have a jpeg file present in the album folder.
My problem is that the Naim app has suddenly stopped displaying upwards of 90% of the album artwork and I’m trying to troubleshoot this.
Both the Bluesound and Jriver apps show the artwork ok.
The artwork has not changed (not on 70000 files anyway), my minimserver settings have not changed (indexArtwork=auto). The only thing I can think of is the NAIM app has been updated since I last used it. I cant recall if I’ve used the NAIM stuff since the last update. Ios on a phone and Ipad have the same issue in not displaying virtually all artwork.
So, I’ve delved a bit into this (and have raised a ticket with NAIM) and looking at artwork pixel sizes. I’m also in the process of asking the folk over at Minim.
However, whatever this shows up doesnt explain why the Naim stuff has suddenly stopped working.
Any pointers would be greatfully recieved. I have looked in this forum but can’t seem to find any recent posts about the issue I’m having.
Ios app = 7.5.1.
Have you tried restarting everything?
I have David, I should have said.
I’ve rebooted the NAS, ditto with ND5XS2, deleted the app and reinstalled.
I’ve reindexed Bluesound to see if it was something in the files, Bluesound shows artwork ok.
I have just noticed in the recently added view in the Naim app and selecting 2025 I only get 22 albums (only 4 with artwork). I know this is incorrect, and confirmed in Bluesound and Jriver.
Another thing I’ve just noticed is I have some classical music in a separate folder and entered in one of the contentdir entries, I haven’t checked all composers, but it looks like the artwork is intact.
What I don’t know too much about is what does minimserver do, what internal db does it have etc?
I may delete the main folder in minimserver, let it sort itself out and then add it back in and see what happens.
Bit of an odd one, and seems to be pointing to something wrong with what minimserver serves up.
I don’t know anything about Minimserver I’m afraid, but there will be others who do. Artwork is often a bit of a struggle, but I’m not aware of anything having happened to Naim recently that has given people new problems.
Anyway, I’ll leave it to others for the time being, but will keep an eye on the thread.
Thanks David. Whats puzzling is that it was all working and now doesnt, so I know something, somewhere has changed.
If you had an idea when it was still ok, then that might point to what has changed.
I was trying fathom that out myself David. This where I cant see how/where minimserver gets it’s date imported from (i.e. where it’s stored).
I’ve removed the ‘main’ folder from minimserver, restarted it on the NAS then a rescan. The music in the ‘main’ folder no longer showing in the Naim app. This good.
I added the 'main folder back, restarted etc. The music in the main folder has returned but no artwork.
However, what I did find odd was that the rescan after adding back the main folder was very quick - I was expecting it to take quite a while (it contains circa 65k tracks/files).
My next thought is to delete minim from the nas and reinstall etc. Before doing that I’m going to see what other folk on here say, and also if the minim people can assist troubleshooting (logs etc).
Thanks for the input David, appreciated.
You might want to see whether your NAS has had a firmware update recently. There are quite often changes in the way NASs work consequent on security-related firmware updates and this can mess up how the NAS interacts with Naim. If your NAS has auto-updated itself, then that could point to settings that you might need to roll back in the NAS.
The nas gets updated, but (as far as I know) only when I trigger it i.e. auto update is off.
I did do it recently, I’ll check whether that coincides with the cutoff in minim/naim.
I found the file that holds the recently added stuff and it looks like it is only holding a few recent entries.
I’m beginning to think (like you) that something has happened for minim to get messed up.
However, not sure i get how the artwork has disappeared. ![]()
I’m pretty certain the Naim app is showing accurately what minim is serving.
Try to have a max of 1000x1000. If you use mp3tag (free on a PC), you can add the album artwork size as a column, then read in all your music in, and sort on that column.
Thank you Gadgetman, I have a separate project to do which is to try and standardise artwork as much as possible. I’m using mp3tag for tagging duties, and already have a spreadsheet from a mp3tag export which contains all the tags I’m interested in (inc. artwork size).
As you’ll have picked up though, this thread is trying to troubleshoot why the artwork has suddenly disappeared from the minim/naim side of things. Things seem to be pointing towards something going wrong with minimserver, I do have the issue raised with them.
Thank you for the input, appreciated.
Out of interest, what were your top artwork sizes?
Out of c. 70000 tracks, 42000 are 1000 pixels or below. A few at 4000 pixels. It was these biggies I was going to attack anyway as a separate project. My main aim with this post is to find out why the vast majority of my artwork has suddenly dissapeared from the minim/naim environment.
While you are waiting for a response, I would tackle those large ones, as it caused me various issues a coupe of years back - perhaps it’s part of the cause, i.e. the internal minimserver database has a problem reading in the artwork due to some limitations added in a firmware update that might be conflicting
Good suggestion.
In the meantime, Simon has suggested installing a third party player on my iphone to see what that does. I’ve installed VLC - it seems to be showing the artwork for the same albums as the naim app. He also said minim does not hold it’s own artwork cache.
Good news, Simon at minim suggested doing a full rescan in Minimserver as he thought the minimserver library cache may have been corrupted in someway.
Did this and it’s worked. Artwork back!
Thanks David and GadgetMan for your input, much appreciated.
