ATC 40 speaker

I removed it (as well as the responses) as verging on ad hominem, and edited. Better to be agreeable, even when you disagree. Thanks.

Wow, Mr D. Latin? It worked for my headmaster back in my school days. Yes, I’m that old.

I still have the scars…

At least you did pay attention to your lessons.

Thanks for the work you do on this forum, it seems to have hit choppy seas lately.

You must have extreme patience and it’s a good example to everyday life.

I know I couldn’t do it, so thank you.

They were a real surprise when we heard them.

Massive cabinets, but didn’t overwhelm a relatively small listening room (suspect the dealer had them setup this way to prove the point, very few purchasers are setting up in huge rooms). Detailed and controlled.

But too much for our ears, 50s are the sweet spot. I think the thunderous 100s would simply hasten the decline of my hearing.

Off topic? Moi?

If you’re about to suggest a Google translation tool to comply with the English-only rule, you’re a braver man than me

Nope, I did a whole year of Latin. I can actually do a lot of swearing in Latin but I don’t think it would meet with mr D’s approval.

There are a couple of themes to every discussion of ATC’s and you see these here.

If you hear the passives, they are most definitely neutral, honest. “Clinical” obviously says as much about the listening preferences of the writer as it does about the speakers; they’re not bland, but they do tell it how it is.

The actives are a completely different and better beast, far more accomplished and stupidly good value for money. My active 40s do everything I want of them, and I had lovely bass-rich ProAcs for decades. Nothing clinical about them, still neutral and honest, but with a presence across the spectrum which IMHO is more 3D than I’ve ever heard with the passives, regardless of the beast of an amp which might be driving them.

That’s ATC’s own opinion…

I think you need to be careful making statements like this - there are no absolutes here. The actives are indeed great VFM but I prefer my passives driven by Naim amps. Therefore using your logic the passives are better…

Of course they’re not though - just different.

It’s just an opinion of course, like everyone else’s.

I have active 40’s one thing I can say, probably mentioned it before is the Active ATC’s respond very positively to very good to excellent power cords and XLR cables.

I agree… I gained a lot by switching to Wireworld Electra 7 in power cord and Eclipse 8 in XLR.
