ATC SCM11’s

I can see why you might think this but the “Show us your ATCs” thread has been running since 2022. Yes I myself am guilty of participating in the new wave of ATC movement currently but now I have greater insight into the company, construction methods, customer support and general ethos that I am happy to put my hand up. There are clearly many other options but it is clear that demoing these things at home is for many very difficult if not impossible. I do wonder however what the best way to identify our preferred speakers actually is. I was lucky but it seems that for many, rolling the dice based on what we read online may be the only viable option. This forum has been by far the most useful (although maybe imperfect) resource for me. Long may it continue along with its many Characters

Room size, construction windows and equipment placement flexibility come into play here.

In my room, 4.7m x 3.3m true rectangle with no alcoves and construction is brick with batons and plaster board I couldn’t get the ATC 50’s to work where others have had success in similar spaces….

It would seem all rooms with the variables above mentioned behave differently, very frustrating.

I only realised this when I moved house, in my old house 5m x 5.5m and solid brick walls no plaster boards just about every speaker I tried worked but when I moved the whole system sounded dreadful and has taken me 4 years and much faffing to resolve….

I agree with you. The 20s are perfect for my room but the 40s or 50s even, in most likely hood with some creative room layout and treatment would I am led to believe both by ATC who actually modelled the space and my dealer who knows my budget, could be made to work. However, in terms of aesthetics and convenience and sound, I cannot imagining pushing those boundaries. I am very excited to receive the 20s hopefully in the next 3wks. :crossed_fingers:

I’m really enjoying my 20’s so hope yours arrive soon!

I have a pair of 20a standmounts with an Atom HE and they sound great.

Mymain system is in a dedicated room so I added some subs which definitely add something that I really enjoy but not essential as the 20’s on their own are superb. I wouldn’t want to add subs to the Atom system as don’t want that room to look like a hifi shop!

I have today received a message from a dealer that is not too far away from me and has the SCM11’s to demo

Whether I can get them for a home demo is yet to be established

It’s a shame to use the Atom with your 20s, they deserve much better… when I listened to my 272/XPSdr with the 40As, I found the sound very good, I had the opportunity to listen to the SPL Director mk2 and it was much better… until you’ve tried something else you don’t know and you don’t realize the capabilities of the ATCs.

Love my SCM11 on the end of my NN50 in my home study….. Captivating and dynamic…

Replacing an Atom HE with a 222 gives marginally better results at twice the price. It makes sense though if analog sources are also used. Adding a ps to the 222 gives noticeably better results at 4 times the price.

I paid less for the new SPL than the sale of the used 272/XPSDR…

It works very well for headphones, late night listening and relatively low volume listening during the day. The room is tricky as it’s round and has a high ceiling so hard to get an excellent sound to justify spending too much more to be honest.

My main system (552/ND555 / 2 x 555ps / active 20 towers) is in the room beneath my daughter’s bedroom so I use the Atom when she is home from Uni!

The active 20’s work wonderfully in both use cases.

The SPL looks a smart piece of kit but not really in my thinking when I bought the Atom HE.

Does it work on the same premise as the atom he I.e. just add active speakers?

Understand, I love the form factor of the atom and as the system is digital only and I didn’t want to double the outlay for “ a little better” and had no intention to add an additional box I left the 222 out of the equation.

The outputs are true balanced XLR on the SPL, just like the ATC. I simply added a streamer, but it’s excellent as a preamp/DAC.

I wonder whether you’ve compared your SPL to the Atom HE. I have one with my PMCs and it’s hugely capable. It’s almost too cheap for how good it is.

In fact, it’s more like 2.7 times the price, so over 5 times the price with the power supply. Talk about diminishing returns. The Atom HE is much cuter too, and less hifi looking if one wants to integrate it into the room discreetly.

No but I compared the HE with the 272/XPSDR and I preferred the 272 but that was with the RCA/XLR outputs.

I think the HE is a headphone amp first and foremost, rather than a high-quality speaker preamp.

I wanted a one box solution so the SPL would not be a consideration. I have to say the headphone amp is excellent as well. As HH says it’s a great box and very easy on the eye.

I see your logic, as you preferred the 272 to the HE and the SPL to the 272. It’s great that there are quite a few options out there. Just in case anyone isn’t aware, the HE has a pair of balanced XLRs, making it a doddle to connect to active speakers. I’ve not tried its headphone amp, but it seems very suitable to connect to speakers.
