ATC SCM20ASL (active) now in the classic range

I’ve been waiting a long time for these:

I knew they would be released eventually. I Just need to start saving now. Has anyone here bought a pair yet?

And shaking of saving,…I notice that there are some massive discounts on the Nait 50 limited edition. Anyone taking a punt?

These speakers have been discussed on the Show us your ATCs thread. Search is your friend.

I’ve heard the Limited Edition version of these speakers but found it difficult to compare with my active 40s because of a different front end.

As for the Nait 50s, there’s several threads on that too, though you may have to wade through over 5000 posts! I’ve recently bought one. It’s currently running in, but first impressions are excellent.

Hello Roger. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I could have sworn I replied ages ago.

I will revisit the Show us your ATCs thread. I did have a brief swipe through the threads but I couldn’t see any active SCM20 ASL classics. I’ll take a deep dive later.

That’s good to hear. I’d love one just to sit and look at it. The industrial design is just…well…it just ‘correct’:slightly_smiling_face:! I wish I’d had the money to snap up one of the bargain deals on these.

I have had the passive 20’s on home demo. They worked well with my main system driven by a 250dr but they struggled with a Naim Atom….

Lovely classic design and if you like the ATC sound they are excellent, room size probably is the deciding factor so ideally a home demo would be recommended.

ATC also released active versions of the 20’s and paired with a Naim Atom HE you would have a very elegant and excellent sounding set up.

I have some active tower 20’s on order and as good as my 40a’s are I think they need a tad more room to breath in my small room (16 sqm) where as the 20’s were just perfect.

As for the Nait 50 if you can live without a remote then it’s an excellent and highly rated integrated amp, shame there isnt a matching source!

I’ve long thought that the 20 ASLT looked perfect for me, other than the price. The new standmounts are more affordable, but they are quite a bit bigger than my PMCs and I can imagine they might look a bit ungainly on stands, being rather deep.

Hi HH, there may be some news on the price of the tower 20’s, it was certainly indicated on a different thread.

I like the front profile of the pmc 21 (classy looking) but not so keen on the side profile…. it’s a relatively small speaker and if that’s what you have become accustomed to the ATC20 stand mount may feel big but that would soon be normalised in my experience.

I tried the active PMC active 21 with an HE in my tricky room (round) and it behaved very badly, no bass and very unimpressive - suspect it was the room as they are well reviewed speakers.

I also tried the passive 20 - sounded great in my main system with a 250 NC but with an atom it was just too much speaker for it to drive and I don’t want a plethora of black box’s in this room.

My dealer stocks ATC so I’m down to listen to the active 20 stand mounts when they arrive.

All my faffing has lead my to the conclusion that the best speakers are the ones that work well in your room!

I agree completely. It’s something of a lottery as to whether something works, especially in non standard rooms such as yours. I’ve rather got used to stand mount speakers, giving used them for over four years now. Most stands are pretty ugly, but PMC’s seem to get as close to elegant as possible.

Yes agree, I was always in the floor stander space but have shifted over time to be more open. My ATC 11’s whilst not as elegant as your PMC’s sound mighty fine on lateral audio stands. That said they probably need a tad more juice than the atom can provide but will try the active 20 stand mounts first as I do like the active presentation and I definitely want a one box solution!

Cable tidiness will be sorted when I make final decision on system!

I can see active 20s with an Atom HE or an NSC222 making a fantastic setup. I did think about the 222 but reading what’s been written here, the HE seems little different when the 222 is used in bare guise. Obviously the 300 power supply takes it to another level, but then you lose the one box simplicity. And the Atom HE is so much prettier than the much more bulky 222.

I think the 222 makes sense if you want a turntable but this room is digital only and I love the form of the Atom (never wowed by the Linn DSM, nice but I prefer Naim sound!) so if the active 20’s work then an Atom HE would be the likely answer.

I find choosing speakers the most difficult part of building a system and probably the most subjective. Once you have found a brand of speakers that fit your taste, there’s a lot to be said for sticking with them, particularly with companies like ATC that aim for a consistent sound over the whole range.

In the last decade and a half, I’ve had and moved on from Kudos and PMC in the main system. Both are forum favourites and justifiably so, but they didn’t quite do it for me and once I’d heard active ATCs I knew they were the brand for me. And I’ve not changed that view since I got my 40s. I am somewhat tempted by the 20s, though …

Same here Roger! I’m a bit of an ATC fan boy!

maybe another option would be to try the Sia2-100 with built in dac, being small form factor, and hide a wiim pro away in that unit? The little atc amp drives my 11’s better than most amps I have had and your welcome to pop over to norwich for a listen.

Cheers Phil, appreciate the offer, I may well take you up on that! I am waiting for Tony to receive his active 20 standmounts and will give them a good demo as a starting point.

I have never heard ATC pre/power/source outside of active speakers….

Unrelated but have some audio stack auva50’s underneath my ATC 11’s / lateral audio stands - like what they are doing… not cheap but they do a 60 day trial
