Mine are bi-amped - gosh it makes a difference… Not NAIM power amps so I won’t say too much.
The 40actives are in effect tri-amped, as each speaker has a tuned amplifier for each driver.
I listened to SCM40 passive with my 250DR, then 300DR, then 40 active… the cheapest option after trade in was actually the lovely 40 actives.
Very similar to my experience, I traded my 252/300DR plus NDX/nDAC, to go for the SCm40A, with Auralic Vega G2, and never regretted it .The Naim was superb, but my current set up is a upgrade.my main concern was , how can the ATC built in amps be better than my 300DR, all I can say is they work brilliantly , maybe because they are tuned to each driver in the 40,s , so less work to do ? And a perfect match. If only I had room for the Active 50,s !!!
The SMC40A do seem remarkably good value - at just less than 7k you get a lot compared to say something from Kudos (even the baby Titan 505 comes in at over 7.5k…).
And you get 6 power amps with the 40A, although I do like Kudos speakers also.
You’re right James . I’ve had mine a year now and love them . Not only are they a relative bargain but its also very reassuring that you have the exact amps required for your speakers , which means no upgraditis on the amp / speaker front .
Another huge bonus for me is not worrying about speaker cable type / length which can really up the budget .
That satin black don’t 'arf look sexy I’ve got the same colour and the grills really look the part.
Very nice Pete - they look good in black
Why are the absorbers on the wall not at the same level?
Actually they are on the same level. There’s just black on top and white one below it on the left side and vice versa on the right side. I have six of those Ecophon Master SQ panels behind my listening spot also. Sofa (sweet spot) is about one meter from the back wall.
Ah, that makes more sense! Room effects are too often ignored even though the room is a crucial part of the system. I note you have a rug on the floor, and athough it doesn’t appear thick the table might have an effect, but have you done anything about other early reflections? Maybe your side walls are far enough away for them not to be an issue? What about ceiling? I have yet to do my room, and probably won’t do the present one because although I’ve assessed what is needed, a house move is planned and needs may be quite different in another room, so I will save the expense until then.
Although personally I like some colour in the room, I can see that your black-and-white decor scheme makes the panels a part of it, which often is a challenge.
Those panels are only thing I’ve done in sense of acoustic treatment of my room. Of course furniture like sofa, rug, curtains, shelves and bed (I live in a studio apartment) are vital part of acoustics. But it works very well this way. Ecophon panels help mostly with mid-high and high echoes. I’ve attached them with wooden rims glued behind the panels. They add 1,5cm air between the panel and wall which makes the treatment slightly more effective.
My setup is on the long wall which is ~5,5 meters wide so there’s about 1,8 meters from both speakers to the side walls, so no acoustic treatment there. On the left side there’s a big window so couldn’t even treat that side. And yes, they match well with my decor which is quite typical scandinavian/modern/black and white. Differs a lot from typical UK styles though.
