Well, as I say, I only consider recommendations from trusted sources.
Nevertheless, thank you again for your concern.

It was just humor…
Personally I gave up responding on that. It’s tiring and useless.
I agree with you by the way.
I know. I just HAD to check the arithmetic. Brain Teaser effect.
I do realize that not everyone will ever agree but after trying a Melco switch I’ll never go back to any of the others I’ve used … is it worth the money? I think so and once you climb up the Naim ladder of black boxes and look back on what those cost I’d say the Melco is a deal.
Ethernet cables as well, won’t go back to the old ones I once used.
That’s worrying as I often eat tomatoes.
There is only one thing better than talking about audiophile switches and that is not talking about audiophile switches - yes it’s Wilde world and perhaps worthy of an Oscar.
Was that the Melco standard power supply, or with an improved power supply like Plixir or something else?
I’ve been around LAN switches for over 25 years. I can’t believe people are saying a bad old 10/100 switch that slurps power is better than a modern gigabit switch designed for low latency. The gigabit standard solved so many clocking and duplex problems.
IMHO you should be looking for a simple cheap gigabit switch that switches packets in silicon (the vast majority), with AVB (low latency, low jitter) to be a bit future proof, no PoE (not needed and slurps power and also something else that needs to detect what device is connected to the port), without a noisy fan, and with a power supply that doesn’t create too much noise. You might want to create a separate VLAN for the connection between your streamer and your NAS (if you have enough ports on both ends to do this) to avoid excessive broadcast or multicast traffic on this link. My advice: spend your money elsewhere e.g. on a fast SSD or better analogue components.
For those who are interested the AVB standard is here
I’m very much with you on this. It’s very liberating.
When I was (much) younger, I used to spend hours tweaking my system or trying out every fashionable little fad to get that slight improvement to the sound. Each little success was a eureka moment for me at the time, even if in retrospect the improvement was very much most of the time very subtle indeed.
I do admit that I also enjoyed my time spent doing this.
In recent years however, I find the prospect of spending time seeking those little very subtle improvements (if indeed they are ‘improvements’ rather than just subtle ‘differences’ that will begin to fade over a very short period of time) somewhat tedious and detracting from my pleasure simply listening to music.
I have been in a position for a number of years where I am very satisfied with each of my music playing systems and no longer have the inclination nor a desire to tinker. I am enjoying listening to music so much more these days and years, very much aided by the onset of music streaming services (which I initially thought I would never adopt) and Roon.
Same here, down to Roon giving me access to it anywhere in the house and a new love for headphones. My new DAC headphone combo is proving to be very addictive listening.
Got to love this streaming lark. You buy a £2k switch. Then you can add a ‘better’ power supply to improve it.
Someone will find it sounds better on a Fraim, then even better cascaded with another Melco switch which then needs a power supply upgrade…
Almost makes you want to buy a Turntable
I know my dealer was so, so about the Melco until he added a Plixir power supply, and then really liked it. But for me at £2k…it should be singing already! Anyway that was what was behind my question.
Maybe that’s the cunning plan!
Of course, you could always not use a network if you don’t, or when you don’t stream from the internet.
I used to enjoy my Dansette all in one…
In fact, it’s still in the loft, I think. I wonder …
Well the market is there so they’re going to make the most of it. I was looking at some chaps overview of his system for one of his reviews. The complexity of the data path with fibre converters, switches and linear power supplies (and some sort of grounding system) was at a point where you’re starting to create more problems than you solve. Not knocking anyone, just find some of these things amusing
Yes you can bypass the network altogether by downloading or storing all your music on a cheap usb ssd. Of course you’ll need to ensure it’s fitted with the right usb chip
Looks like Melco S100 is not perfect. Whats best forum people are replacing clock, adding clock dc input and wiring. Oh my…
Well … lots of opinions in this thread.
My two penny worth is simply this. I have just replaced my Netgear switch with a refurbished Cisco 2960.
The sound quality immediately improved, easier to follow a tune, instruments and a cleaner sound. So far just listened to my NDS, will try the ‘Qutes out later.
Cost £200, plus two days trying to reset the beast - gave up and plugged it in and swapped all the Cat 5 and 6 cables over.
I’ll need to do more research on using a console (MacBook). But my questions to @ElMarko, @Simon-in-Suffolk and @MeToo , and anyone else, how critical is a reset and what support/table is best for the switch?
