Ayrton Senna 1960 - 1994

Some of these so-called greats of F1 were prone to a bit (lot) of cheating. Senna crashing into Prost (more than once), not that Prost was blameless in his career. Schumacher also known to take-out competitors to win the title for example.

Among the names here, I don’t see Sterling Moss, who set the record for the Mille Miglia in 1955, averaging 98mph over 1,000 miles in around 10 hours on the public highway and who’s defence of Mike Hawthorn probably cost him his own 1958 Grand Prix world championship.

Or Tom Kristensen with 9 Le Mans victories.

I also think Lewis hasn’t given up by a long shot.

Yes, Alain Prost has always been a good sportsman. Like you say … humble, and he knows he’s just one of many excellent drivers over the years.

For sure. They all had they’re good days and bad days. Mostly good days I assume.

Yes, exactly. That was the point that @IanRobertM and I were making. So many excellent drivers over the many years of F1, and yet us F1 enthusiasts have to contend with this plethora of over-exuberant, Senna fan-boys.
I think most of us have our fav few, but really, each of these great drivers, individually, are just a small piece of great driving talent in the 100-year-old world of Formula 1. And Sterling Moss was definitely one of these greats.
I feel like I over-used the word ‘great’.

I see. If we are making sure we are not leaving out Greats, then I’d also mention Graham Hill, who started late (25) but became double F1 world champion, 5x Monaco winner, Le Mans winner and Indy 500 winner. Also if you ever watch his interviews he had a razor wit.

We’d also have to recognise the untimely deaths of many contenders for the GOAT, not least Jim Clark, Senna himself even, mean we never got to see the fulfilment of that talent. My mother introduced me to F1 and would always have voted for Clark in any poll. What I find fascinating about him and Moss is that they raced anything on 4 wheels and won in it, with Moss for example competing in 60+ races in one season. And if you asked Moss who was best, he’d always say Fangio.

Sorry, Senna Fan Boy here. YMMV, as always.

One of many, and we certainly all have our favourites and for many reasons. Prost is probably my favourite, but I always enjoyed watching Nikki Lauda drive.

I was always a Lotus fan - starting with Jim Clark.

So, I was a Senna fan from when he drove for Lotus… :slightly_smiling_face:

Think Jack Bradham deserves a mention as well. He not only drove but he built the cars and owned the team. Makes the current generation of drivers sound like over paid kids.

Yeah, it sure does …

I had a soft spot for Lotus as well. One of the good ol’ Brit teams.

Triple world champion. To this day the only person to have won the F1 world championship in a car he designed himself.

Michael Vaillant was certainly the best.

For me a legend of a racer but also truely ruthless … when on the track. Whatched him in the 80’s and 90’s - terrific racing…his spat with Prost took things to a new level… On a different note always wanted a Honda NSX with the Senna tweaked suspension…

Possibly the greatest driver of all time, I have just looked up his career. Is he still racing? Extraordinary!!
