Simon you are clearly something of an expert on all this and I’m just not. I can’t pretend to understand everything you say but I sort of get the jist of it - I hope!
well it might well be depending on what you are connecting it to…
Wireless you would be in a good position.
With Ethernet you would benefit I suggest going to a quality mains earthed switch before your streamer, because I believe the Smart Hub is double insulated so will create common mode currents albeit at very low levels.
However such common mode currents in the higher audio frequencies will be very limited, as non trivial noise here would affect the ability of the DSL modem - which is sensitive to noise - and excessive noise here would reduce the internet sync speed.
Yes I was actually just about to say that! I’m glad it’s all in the past TBH and I can’t see me returning to streaming.
That bird flew some time ago. I remember how good the experimental FLAC Proms broadcasts of a few years ago were. I suspect, admittedly without evidence, that there was not enough enthusiasm from the Beeb’s higher-ups to support making it permanent on R3, for example. A shame IMO as I particularly enjoy Choral Evensong and the R3 sound engineers have a way of capturing the feeling of being in a cathedral or chapel that I’ve not heard on commercial recordings.
Roger
yep I remember the Prom FLAC trials from the Beeb - they were superb.
Incidentally, we have two Chord ethernet Ground Arays plugged into our BT hub - a legacy from streaming. I’ve left them there even though the hub is no longer connected to the system. We don’t even stream video anymore. My thought was that they would help absorb noise from the Hub and prevent it being fed back into the mains. What, if any, are your thoughts on this? Thanks for the detailed explanations it’s just that they rather go above my head but I appreciate your taking the time to try to explain.
A good deal of discussion on this forum seems to be about one piece of hifi or system being “better” than another. But I think that risks oversimplifying something that is often more complex.
In the small bedroom I use as an office I have a Nait 50 and have contrived two sources: a WiiM as transport into Chord Qutest for streaming and a CD5XS via its analogue output for CD replay. That means two different DACs and they do sound different. Thing is, though, I enjoy both. Depending on the music I want to listen to or just my mood I’ll choose one or the other even when I have a ripped version of the CD on my NAS. I just like having the choice and variety. But it probably just shows how indecisive I am.
Roger
I don’t for one minute understand everything that’s being discussed here
All I can say is that we are very happy with the sound quality of our streamer using Qobuz
We used a good quality Ethernet cable initially but now use WiFi for the streamer as we believe it sounds better than the cable
Recently a number of albums from my favorite classical musicians were issued on streaming only. No more CDs or LPs. At the same time, my CDS3 went out of service. I decided to take the plunge and buy an NSS333/NPX300.
I use Qobuz now and I must say to me it’s a revelation. So many things to listen to, I’m like a kid in a candy store.
I’m curious to do a CDS3/NSS333 match-up when the CD player returns to service.
Claude
What you’re describing required no more than a NAS then.
How would I connect a NAS drive to our Qutest DAC? How would I browse and select music to play?
It strikes me that you bought a product which created a problem rather than a solution and compounded that by buying a lot of products wguch addressed the symptoms rather than the cause.
I’ve been told I needed a number of the Chord products you bought. I tested a number of them in my system and concluded that they must work somewhere for someone but definitely not me. Several struck me as nonsense on stilts.
We also found Qobuz a revelation ClaudeP
Be very interesting to hear your comparison once your cd player is sorted and returned to you
That doesn’t make sense to me. The problem wasn’t the Melco but the network noise which affects all such products. I bought products to address the noise.
Definitely not my experience with any Chord Co. products. Specifically which ones struck you as being nonsense, and why?
not knowing the construct of the cables I dont know. But if they are unscreened and use ferrite chokes clamped around the cables at each end - then yes they might well help impede common mode noise
That doesn’t make sense to me. The problem wasn’t the Melco but the network noise which affects all such products.
The problem was you went down the USB route.
You buy a Primare Np5 streaming bridge.
Ethernet cable from melco to NP5. NP5 converts the data that arrives via ethernet into a spdif output. The spdif output is sent to the dac via coax or optical.
Everything is controlled by the Primare app.
I really feel for you @70sPete
This thread obviously needs renaming to ‘Back to Streaming’ going on most of the replies you are getting ![]()
Please keep sane and enjoy spinning those CDs

This threads only just warming up. We’ve not got round to discussing VINYL yet. ![]()
don’t you dare! ![]()
