Bass/Mid driver on SBL keeps cutting out

Hi All,

I’m seemingly having a bit of a problem with intermittent cutting out of the mid/bass driver on my right side SBLs. Midway through a song, it cuts out and sounds out of balance… If I adjust the volume up slightly and it then cuts back in.

Problem is, it’s now beginning to do it more frequently. The tweeter works, so it’s not cut totally, just the mid/bass driver.

I haven’t moved or done anything to investigate as yet… what are your thoughts on where to start? Crossover joint in the SBL crossover? Preamp volume pot, mid/bass driver on its way out??

Obviously, I’m really hoping the speakers aren’t on their way out and it’s something simple, easy and cheap to sort. Really like my SBLs and wasn’t ever planning on replacing them any time soon! Any help/guidance much appreciated!

If it’s just one speaker affected then it might just be a crossover issue. Swap the crossover from the other speaker maybe.

I would start by swapping the L and R speaker cables so that you can determine whether the problem lies with the speakers or your amp/source.

……and while you’re doing that, have a close look at the banana plugs and check for any poor connections, dry joints on solder, etc.

Is this something that happens quite often? Any experience of the same thing?

Before you do anything try pulling the naim plugs on the woofers about half way out. Bet it cures it.

Really @Jesfirth???

Crikey, they are super tight in there. Shuffled it a little bit, but not halfway out by any means. Currently playing fine… Let’s hope that lasts! Hmmmm… If that’s the case @Jesfirth then thank you very much!!

Willing to bet if you have naca that the speaker posts on the crossover needs resoldoing

I’m going to take the right one out today and have a look @garyi. To be fair, I did move the cables ever so slightly yesterday evening following the message from @Jesfirth and I played a side of an album without a single drop out. So I’m seriously hoping it’s a slight glitch in the connection.

But, you’re probably right in taking the crossover off and having a look. I’m seriously no expert with what I’m looking for though, but I’ll certainly take a look!

Thanks to everyone so far for their comments and help!

No not the bass driver where you plug the amp speaker cable into the cross over give it a wiggle and see if the speaker posts on the cross over move.

Yeah, I’m going to take it out and have a look at it properly today. Fingers crossed it’s a minor connection issue and nothing like the crossover being shot, or the driver going!

I had same problem with my SBLs mk1s
I got cheap because owner said speakers keep cutting out,
After inspection I found that the crossover terminals came away from the soldering on the boards,
Secure terminals and resolder,
Might not fix your problem,
But fixed mine,
