In 1983 Sisters of Mercy takes on Dolly Parton and “Jolene” . I had the pleasure to hear the cover live in 1991.
I have the studio cover that Linda Ronstadt did of Tumbling Dice. OK.

I saw her backed by the Nelson Riddle orchestra. Her encore was Desperado which blew away both her studio recording and The Eagles version.
I also saw in Central Park, NYC as Mabel (also with Kevin Kline) in a glorious production of The Pirates of Penzance.

But somehow, the cover by the Tubes conveys the sense of longing in the lyrics so much more forcefully.
Lucy Kay sings Nella Fantasia, I think beats Sarah Brightman - I think its the last few notes that really stand out

Again, anything off the You Scratch My Back could qualify, even made an Elbow song amazing, who for no rational reason just don’t do it for me.
