In 1983 Sisters of Mercy takes on Dolly Parton and “Jolene” . I had the pleasure to hear the cover live in 1991.

I saw Linda Ronstadt live back in the mid 70s with Andrew Gold on lead guitar and vocals - a really enjoyable concert!
Sarah McLachlan - River. Nice version of the Joni Mitchell classic.
I saw her backed by the Nelson Riddle orchestra. Her encore was Desperado which blew away both her studio recording and The Eagles version.
I also saw in Central Park, NYC as Mabel (also with Kevin Kline) in a glorious production of The Pirates of Penzance.

But somehow, the cover by the Tubes conveys the sense of longing in the lyrics so much more forcefully.
