I have carried that sketch with me down the decades.

Never seen that before, but never got in tune with Sayle.

My response was within the context of a response towards HH. outside of it, it has obviously no sense.

But have you ever seen Queen?

I fell asleep when I was dragged along to see the “must see”, kings of bombast at the Hammersmith Odeon. A few pints of London Pride before the gig probably helped.

No, thank goodness!

He was indisputably very patchy and still is but when he nails it…

Falling asleep at a gig is rarely a measure of the gig. Friend of mine fell asleep at Husker Du.

Sacrilege

I must plead guilty to falling asleep twice at a gig…first time was Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in 1979 when my excuse was it had been a very long day as we were woken up at something like 5 in the morning as people tried to get in early, I had had quite a lot to drink through the day and Jimmy Page was doing his quiet noodly thing before Kasmir and I made the mistake of lying down; the opening of Kasmir then woke me up with a jolt! The second time was a U2 concert in Denver when I was there second night on a work trip with my excuse being that I was severely jet lagged thinking it was still the middle of the night as at home…

I can’t imagine much being duller than Snow Patrol, but saying that I once sat through a Steve Hackett performance. Some people like watching two hours of guitar masturbation, but I can’t say it did much for me.

Okay, you can all “ramble on” as much you wish but I’m closing the poll on Saturday evening.

Good point, and with vinyl you can always plonk the needle down for track 2 should you so desire.

I didn’t think Vinnie played on any DS work, Porcaro yes on On Every Street.

Alchemy is the best album, and one of the best live albums ever. Some great footage on YouTube too. If you got a spare 10 minutes, love this version of Sultans.

My mistake. It’s wasn’t Vinnie Colaiuta, but Manu Katché I was thinking of. Wiki reckons he’s the drummer on Heavy Fuel. Whether that’s correct I dunno. Brilliant whoever it was!

Hope this link doesn’t beak any forum rules. But hopefully okay given context of this thread

@LindsayM Thank you for starting this thread. It has been interesting to see the poll results and all the diverse comments.

For me, my favourite Dire Straits album has changed over time. In the 80s and 90s it was always Brothers in Arms. It was almost sacrilege to think otherwise! The opening few seconds of So Far Away still brings back wonderful memories of that time in my life. Has the overall emotional impact of the entire album dissipated over time, as someone mentioned above? Sure, but only from a very high point. It is still a belter.

Then it was their first album that became the favourite with Sultans of Swing offering the monumental guitar solo but without the 80s fizz.

But over time it has always been Communique that I return to to get my Dire Straits kick. It really does hit the spot. “Where Do You Think You’re Going” is one of their most underrated songs and the first 13.4 seconds of Lady Writer are just sublime perfection. Once Upon a Time in the West and Follow Me Home are understated but bookend the album very fittingly.

There is no band quite like Dire Straits (Steely Dan, with respect, no thanks and track radio in Tidal and Spotify throws up the likes of Guns n Roses, The Police, REM, Pink Floyd and AC/DC - all very different). Their contribution to music has been phenomenal and all of their albums are important, not just because they were successful or technically excellent but because they still rank as many people’s favourite albums today.

I would have to say my favourite is their first album. MK does come across as a little awkward, not your typical Rock Star like Plant or Morrison for sure.

One of my favourites
