7.5m sales for LOVE OVER GOLD… That sounds more like it! :innocent:

This thread really does highlight to me that there is no one quite like Dire Straits. Especially in the last few years. The War on Drugs maybe? Any others?

And by some margin. Making Movies 2nd from bottom. Madness.

Makes absolute sense to me. First sold to a certain sort of bloke on the back of a single which, if not unique, certainly stood out at the time. Second tailed off cos there wasn’t really a hit single. Third lost them a lot of that initial audience but got them a new audience on the back of another great single. Fourth had a single which was a tired sounding thing and didn’t really fit the album. The rest of the album is good but also an attempt to regain some of that original audience. It was caught in both camps and arguably fell short in both. Fifth piggy backed on several hot singles and soared accordingly etc etc.

These numbers are the same as I see on bestsellingalbums.org site.
Adding up sales for LOG on Wikipedia suggest 3.3 Million sales.
Never sure what to believe on the internet.

Chartmasters gives a total 4.91 million sales just for Europe alone, with a worldwide total of 7.51 million, beating out both Communique and Making Movies.

However Bestsellingalbums puts the figure at 2.85 million, which seems quite a difference. Why there should be such a wide disparity here I don’t know, but fascinating all the same.

My all-time favorite Dire Straits album was Brothers in Arms, especially shortly after it came out, as it was one of the best CD recordings I had, excellent sound quality. Many years later, I found “On Every Street” to be my favorite. It is a completely different vibe, but I’ve come to keep it as my favorite. I’m also a big Knopfler fan and find myself listening to streams of his solo stuff quite often.

Just picked up Communique on CD, used for $5, sounding very nice and the toe is tapping.
