Best Naim speakers for 272/250dr

Next on my list is speakers , I’m quite drawn to the ovators s400 which seem reasonably priced , my room is 4mtr x4mtr , mainly listen to electronic music , ambient and a bit of of sparse acoustic think talk talk etc
Thanks in advance

Selection of speakers is mostly about which speakers suit your personal tastes and how they integrate into your room’s acoustics. The only way is to listen to lots of speakers, decide which ones really don’t suit you and then listen to as many of the others as possible in your own room.

Neat, Kudos, Dynaudio etc are amongst the choices, really depends on your room.

Ovator S400s are imho, one of the easier speakers for room placement, so you are unlikely to find them difficult to accommodate. They are not universally admired, simply becuase they need to be driven well. I have a pair on a Nova (in bedroom) which are ok, but would benefit from more power, which your NAP250DR will deliver.
In kitchen / diner, a very difficult environment, and lots of off axis listening, they do fabulously well with NC222 + NC250, so if your room is relatively neutral, you will be in for a treat with a pair.
Three things to bear in mind; first, find a nice pair, the youngest will be ten years old, so factor in the costs of a crossover service with Steve at Wilmslow Audio (he’s done one pair for me recently, another being organised), likely around a quarter of the cost of a pair, going by recent S400 prices. Second use Naca5 cable + Ovator plugs. Third, come back when you have a pair, some fine tuning will bring out the best.
Incidentally when you post a question, always worth updating your profile; no info on your current speakers / support et al; useful!
Good luck with finding a good pair; be patient. I’ve bought two extra pairs this year, for my av system, which includes a NAP250DR for the front speakers.

Someone has to suggest that if you mean Naim speakers as suggested by your thread title, then you should also consider the Naim SL2 which is of course the best speaker that Naim ever made. So I will.

When I ran my 272, 250dr I used Focal Sopra 1. They were so good I bought Diablo utopia to replace them.

I don’t have the 272 but personally I was really impressed with the little Kudos X2 for the price you can get them today. Good sound stage and… they were just real fun to listen too. I will most probably give a try on Kudos higher end sooner or later.

I will test Neat SX1 during Christmas time. But not sure the bass will fit the room. TBC

I’m very happy with ProAc D2R with my 250DR. Plenty of details in high freq and real tight bass (just enough for me)

Good luck on your exploration! Keep us posted!

I have to say I’m suprised by the lack of “love “ for Naim speakers , especially on a Naim forum …
The silence is deafening

It could be because they aren’t sold any longer.
I’ve never had a chance to hear them.

Shouldn’t really be surprised in my opinion. The Naim speakers which were most appreciated on here were the SBL, SL2 and the ultimate speakers were the DBL. I had a pair of NBL which, in the right room and driven by a powerful power amp could sound wonderful. But these speakers went out of production many many years ago. They were replaced by the Ovator series which I have not heard but impression given on this forum was generally luke warm. There was the S400, S600 and (very limited production numbers) the S800. Always wanted to hear the S800 but doubt that will ever happen - rarer than hen’s teeth. Ovators were withdrawn from the market and we now have Focal speakers from the joint owned company. Opinions are quite divided here on Focal but you specifically asked re Naim speakers. If you insist on Naim, I would suggest you try to locate a set of SBL or SL2 for your amplification. I would consider it at the least eccentric if you were not also prepared to listen to some modern alternatives which you may find suit your room and system better. Good luck with your search.

For all the years I’ve had my NAIM system, the only constant throughout the many upgrades, has been my speakers, Allae’s. My friendly NAIM dealer said I could always do better, but it would cost a lot of money. They sounded great with my previous system. 282/250dr, and sound real great with my current system. My listening area is about 15’ by 20’.
