What a time to have been alive and visiting jazz clubs in NYC.

Thanks for posting this. Tip o’the hat to Michael Frayn who is now 91. What an exciting place to be as a young man!

I had dinner with Frayn years ago. Not at a jazz club though. An entertaining gentleman.

But Birdland is not the Birdland of 1959. It moved for one thing. It’s now in the heart of the theater district and offers a lot of cabaret style programming along with jazz.

However, the 1950s jazz vibe remains alive at the Village Vanguard. It’s my favorite place to take visitors to the city. And by New York City standards, it’s a cheap date.

I remember visiting Birdland when it was in the vicinity of Columbia University. The night I was there Candid Records were recording the band (Hilton Ruiz Sextet) and the results can be heard on this CD.

Producer Alan Bates and recording engineer Malcolm Addey were based on the next table !
