Bookshelf speakers of interest

Has anyone come across Robson Acoustics?
Rob, the proprietor has developed a line of speakers and amplifiers but it’s his speakers that have me intrigued. Following a very pleasant conversation I asked Rob to build a pair of his Regis II speakers for me to demo. These are a sealed box unit utilising a Fountek ribbon tweeter and Purifi mid/bass unit in a sealed enclosure ( the Regis I was a ported design but Rob told me the advent of the Purifi driver does away with the need for a vented enclosure and makes the speakers easier to accommodate in a UK room). Speakers are currently a build in progress, but here are some shots of the speakers being built, with 25mm birch ply cabinets encased in leather and walnut caps and rear spine. If they sound as good as they look they will make me very happy

Have certainly heard an amp which stood out at a Manchester show some years back as being one of the few musical offerings. Was very impressed and took a business card. I was then distracted by “life” and never got the chance to follow up. That amp both looked and sounded lovely though. If the speakers are similar then I’d imagine them to be in the Harbeth/Spendor ball park but perhaps more resolving.

I hoping more resolving than both of those brands which are “nice” but not, IMHO, the last in resolution and transparency!

Robson Greystoke (ported with “dish-shaped magnesium alloy” woofer and ribbon tweeter) was reviewed very favourably in Hi-Fi World of February 2009.

It was awarded five globes. “Interesting loudspeaker with a svelte, fast and detailed sound that’s ideal for smaller rooms.”

For:

  • Fresh tonality
  • Superb treble
  • Elegant cabinet finish

Against:

  • Difficult to drive
  • Limited bass
  • Need amplifier power

The Regis II, with 5.5 inch Purifi bass/mid and Fountek Ribbon, built and ready to be shipped for demo. Can’t wait to have a listen when they arrive. For those interested I will post listening updates when I have them.
