Shocked positively or negatively ?
In a bad way. Only reinforced when I was in Boston a week later killing time before my evening flight back to the U.K. and visited a couple of HiFi shops I knew, one of which had set up a Sondek with Mark Levinson Class A amps and big three panel Magnaplanar speakersā¦
āNo highs, no lows, must be Boseā
A saying from decades past.
One of the things about the 901s was they were marketed like all the othe 01 series as giving a consistent presentation in any room. But the 901s were a very different beast and needed very careful setup. For a start they needed bare wall behind and to the sides and the wall needed to be load bearing or at least heavily dampened. Then of course the active crossover sitting before the power amp needed, like any active crossover, careful adjustment of the pots to work with the room. But as these pots were just out on display and not internal, they invited playing with. But they were not really tone controls. There was definitely only one right setting for a given room. I donāt think the average Bose dealer was really able to set them up right. UK homes had the right types of wall but wrong size rooms. US homes had the right sized rooms but wrong walls. In other words, they required real effort and a proper stand. Not the supplied pedestal.
But even set up optimally, you either accepted their cartoon sound stage or you didnāt. Most didnāt.
I drove mine with Linn amplification and source. My next speaker was the Linn Keilidhs. Iāve said many times I loved the Keilidhs, but I sold them on before the 901s.
Personally, I couldnāt care less what happens to McIntosh but sure, understand that those who like the brand can feel uneasy, as with any change in ownership.
Agreed.
How do you clean it?
Straight into the bath
As Mr Bond once said, āshocking!ā
Harmon International owns Mark Levinson nowā¦
I guess Iāll have to reacquaint myself with Windows
Itās not like it was intā old days.
Itās mainly designed around ads and data-mining these days as far as I can tell.
At least Bose is owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which means McIntosh is no more in the hands of private equity devils.
I wonder why they bought that?
I didnāt know that academic institutions/universities normally buy commercial organisations.
I know that many universities create their own spin-offs from activities of researchers.
But thatās quite a different thing to buying a large profit-oriented corporation.
Ah - I just looked it up:
Amar Gopal Bose (November 2, 1929 ā July 12, 2013) was an American entrepreneur and academic.
An electrical engineer and sound engineer, he was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologyfor over 45 years.[2] He was also the founder and chairman of Bose Corporation.
In 2011, he donated a majority of the company to MIT in the form of non-voting shares to sustain and advance MITās education and research mission.
I agree - that is a much better owner to have them a private equity one.
That was a āsoundā thing to do
Itās not bad imo. Looks like an early 90s table lamp. You need the right furnishings to house themā¦
