C, A and D can be generated by a 90 degree rotation, whereas B can’t?
Nicely spotted Dozey. Well done.
I’ve tried the phonetic pronunciation and I get lost about a quarter of the way into the first line !
[/quote]
I wrote it correctly and it is pronounced like I wrote, but in French pronunciation. For no french person, perhaps it’s too difficult to find.
Edoink has a French wife, he will tell us what he thinks of that.
Six cent is pronounced sisan, but in French…
Oh dear, this is getting difficult.
I am able to “read” the phonetic teaser, and in my mind, it is easy to say it. However, if I try to speak it out aloud, it is such a tongue twister, I get muddled about half way along the first line !
This isn’t a criticism of the teaser which is nice, just an amusing observation of the tongue-twister
I know some polish too, but then nobody will find unfortunately.
So I was wrong finally…apart in the symmetrical point of view.
The small potential error that I was referring to was the spelling of “six cent” at the beginning of the second line of the rhyme.
My French is limited so it might be me that is wrong
I don’t know how to write it in English phonetic. The “ i “ in French doesn’t exist in English ( in phonetic or pronunciation).
The x in six is not pronounced. Six is pronounced si.
I wouldn’t say you are wrong. Different ? Yes ! And Dozey’s observation shows how three of the four picture are, in effect, identical.
There is no error in the French writing and the approximate pronunciation. I don’t know the phonetic letters.
How do you write “six hundred” in French ?
Six cent
That’s what I thought. I think we’re getting there…
That’s why I wrote …
I have copied the bit I am refering to in bold italics. Perhaps we should transfer this discussion to “The Use of English” thread, or better still, start a “The Use of French” thread instead ?
I understand. I read again what I wrote. YOU ARE RIGHT DON. I wrote too quickly. It’s six cent scies, not si cent. I gave more confusion for something already difficult.
Si 6 ( six ) scies scient 6 cigares, six cent ( 600) scies scient 600 cigares.
…a while has passed…
If 1.2.3 and 9,10,11 do NOT balance,
Then one of the diamonds 9, 10, 11, IS the odd one.
And IF 9,10, 11 scale went DOWN, we know that whichever diamond it is, it’s HEAVY
Conversely, IF the 9, 10, 11 scale went UP, the odd diamond is LIGHT
Compare 9 with 10 on the pendulum balance
IF they balance, then 11 is the odd diamond
and we already know whether it’s heavy or light
IF 9, 10 do NOT balance, then whichever one matches the previously identified Heavy/Light criteria, IS the odd diamond.
So now we are left with the first IF ie
IF (1, 2, 3, 4) v (5, 6, 7, 8) does NOT balance…
… then clearly one of the diamonds 1 to 8 is the odd one out, so…
… i’ll leave it there for a while !
I thought a little relaxation from the diamond teaser might be in order …
What number should replace the question mark ?
56
Spot-on Frank, Well done.
