This has never happened to me with any product, but it looks like our brand new Mu-so 2 which I received yesterday is stuck in a firmware update loop.
So, what happened? I received the Mu-so and installed it conform instructions, so turned it on, added a new device in the iOS (beta) app (maybe I should have used the release version instead), connected it to the wifi and it prompted a new firmware version, which I chose to install. I believe it was 3.3.x to 4.4.0.
It started updating and rebooting and updating and rebooting. After 8 or so reboots I became suspicious.
Long story short:
it goes through the same cycle every time
short red led 0.5 second
led off 0.5 second
yellow led appr. 10 seconds
blinking yellow led appr. 10 seconds
purple led 2 seconds
blue led several minutes (I assume it updates or recovers)
Kept it on for hours yesterday, but same thing every time
However, the mu-so does appear in the app, both beta and release version. Briefly, but tuned to Naim Radio (out of the box I assume), however no sound, but with updated artist and song info. So the wifi connection seems to work.
I have tried to connect via Ethernet, but that didn’t resolve the issue.
Turning it off and on, also does not help.
I tried a factory reset, but it isn’t on long enough, it seems.
Obviously my dealer is aware and will pick this up on Tuesday, but I am still hoping to get it going to save me the hassle of shipping it back to Naim.
Does anyone have the golden tip how to solve this?
Dismiss the app and then re-start. Then try a hard unplug of the Mu-So, wait 5 minutes then re-plug into the mains and see if the new firmware has taken and it starts up normally. Otherwise Naim support may be able to assist but as you have your dealer involved then hopefully they will help out and if it’s a hardware issue can replace for you.
My Mu-so 2 (nice wood version) was a PITA. Often losing my network (it was on Wi-Fi and less than 1m from the router). I only used it as a soundbar for my TV. It was returned to Salisbury twice for new “boards”. Even Naim support said they could be temperamental.
Sold it for good money on eBay, bought a Sonos soundbar and haven’t looked back. Despite all the noise about the Sonos app, I’ve never experienced any connectivity issues with Sonos. Yes, the app doesn’t look great, but neither does Naim’s. Both need a thorough overhaul in terms of UX.
I am pretty sure it is the wifi. A friend bought also a Mu-so 2 and got it delivered yesterday as well. He has no issues wired, but did experience issues via wifi. Updating the firmware took him all night and only after unplugging and plugging it in again he got it to work.
I have now connected it to the router directly by wire and I notice that the ethernet does not connect during startup - probably because it was setup in wifi mode - and only after 4 seconds in the “update process” it connects to the wifi.
I am now planning to turn off my Mesh Wifi system and only turn on the wifi of the router (non mesh) to see if that gets it going again.
Try this
power off your muso2.
Power off router and restart.
Then connect muso 2 to ethernet and power on.
I think the router is expecting the muso by wifi only.
Tried that, but at no avail. So it is boxed waiting to return to the dealer. I should have configured through Ethernet. But that is after the fact now.
Thanks for your input. I have tried Ethernet but that also doesn’t work. Also the factory reset seems not to work. I have tried multiple times with different durations during several points during the boot procedure.
My point made ages ago, i nearly took our muso2 back under warranty it was so flakey and unreliable, i know its a different product , but our brother all in one device of 8 years will wake up, do its job and go to sleep after, scan print copy, anything, we are constantly rebooting, resetting, reinstalling everything to keep using it. Mark my words this will kill Naim after our 40 year journey. Just not acceptable today
