BRING BACK Active SL2! vs Magico A3 (Magico = Boring)

In a small room driven by 552/500/NDS (non DR). Would you prefer SL2 or SBL?

How small is room and what shape and is it live sounding?

Believe it’s around 14-15 m2. I have some dampening so rather damped I’d say.

Active SBL!

We clearly have an activist here!

Regardless of how they may sound, the Magicos aren’t particularly attractive. I’m sure they’d not be accepted at home.

That being said, I’ve never liked the SL2s either; I think it’s the oversized grilles that look so hideous to my eye.

Now, if we were talking SBLs, that is a design of true beauty

I’m doing alright. Trying to sort stuff out before my op on friday. Shopping, some repairs around house, usual stuff. Had new dishwasher and washing machine turn up yesterday as old ones were end of life. Unfortunately new dishwasher has a fault and leaks into the base of the appliance. Will need to be repaired or replaced!

I used Kelidhs with LP12, 82, 2 Olive HiCaps and 250CB. Then moved them into conservatory for a while. Sold them eventually. They were great speakers and looked lovely!

How are you @sound-hound ?

Naim had it right, they designed speakers that can be positioned against the wall what more could one ask for, who wants speakers encroaching into the room unless you are minted with a dedicated listening space.

Fully agree! I would like to see more of the Naim principles and design thinking. More music, less Hifi.

Yet strangely less so in the world of blindfold skateboarding.

IBL and DBL also work very well in a small room.

Do naim speakers play depth, scale, size same way as speakers designed to be placed out in the room? I’m thinking air behind the speaker is what creates this but might be wrong.

Ah now there is an excellent idea to match my own - joint project?

No issues with what you describe, SL2s or SBLs once setup correctly just disappear into the music space. When listening I can imagine throwing a ball between the speakers, with the ball bouncing into the distance.

I would love DBLs but worry my room is too small! 4.2m x 3.6m

Welcome to have a listen! My active S600s are positioned in front of a part of the window, part fireplace!

I think your room would be okay with DBLs its finding a pair that’s the challenge. My room is a tad bigger if a pair came up I wouldn’t hesitate

Having recently helped a friend rebuild/setup a pair of active DBLs I was able to compare the sound to my passive ProAc’s.

The DBL bass excelled with speed and boogie, so much fun to hear. The biggest difference was the contrast between the tweeter’s. The ProAc ribbon tweeter was much more detailed and sweet. Imagine a modern Naim speaker with an actively driven ribbon tweeter… that would be amazing.

The IBL, SBL, SL2 and DBL were such great speakers. In the right room, properly driven they were incredible. Roy is a genius… you should hear his turntable!

Great to hear! Yes, Roy George is a genius! I would like to see many of the Naim legends come out of retirement and be seen (and heard) more!
