Broken Benz Glider SL

Ouch.

Went to put a record on earlier but sound only from right channel, so checked TT and cartridge.

Turns out what I assume is left channel signal wire has been broken from cantilever.

Anyone know if this is fixable by Benz? (I have msgd dealer but they’re closed until Tuesday and figured some clever folks on here are bound to know…!)

I had one repaired here without problems: hifi-ilona
But that was almost 20 years ago…

Yes, there are plenty of cartridge repairers that can re-attach the wire to the coil.

So, been quoted £600 to do a rewind….

Benz don’t really want to do it because they’ve got a 6 month backlog, so North West audio quoted me.

Or I can part ex for a Benz higher up the food chain, a REF-S, or a similar price range Phasemation PP-200 from the same UK distributor.

Apparently Benz cartridges now hard to come by?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Have you contacted expert stylus company, they maybe able to do it. I believe they used to have some dealing with benz.

Coincidentally I’ve just done that this morning. Looking at their site, they may be more useful.

I though Benz cartridges had gone out of business?

Yep North West thought the same, though you can still see their cartridges on line so, dunno?

Could be old stock?
When i went to replace my Benz SL ACE 18 months or so ago, my dealer said they were no more. Which was a shame as they were well priced. My linn krystal was near double what i paid for my SL ACE. Not much of a difference IMO.:frowning:

Ah.

I’ve never come across Phasemation before.

Seem slightly esoteric, Japanese cartridges but well respected. Only commentary I can see on Pp-200 is a HiFi+ review and a couple of mentions on the forum.

Anyone know them?

Hi Jamie,

according to this Show us your turntable - #4979 by Vorsanteri Benz is still retipping cartridges. I once had my Koetsu rebuild by Expert Stylus and liked the result.

Yep, seems wherever I go, it’s
£600-£750 depending on whether new cantilever added to full rewind. On a £1k cartridge.

Or the Benz is a £250 trade in against a Phasemation, i.e. a new Phasemation PP-200 for £750.

This is a very good adress for all around Benz.

For around 500 euros, you can have your cart rebuilt by Van den Hull, Holland. He does a great job. And among the best carts available.

Does he not only repair VDH cartridges?

Not only, I sent him once a Koetsu. Was even better sounding than the original one ( Black).

Van den huul can do Benz as well - very good. Has a good reputation according to German Benz fanbase.
I live my wood very much and I am very sorry that the Benz era is a bit on its way down - if not even faded.
Hifi Ilona was a very good adress for everything around Benz - you should ask them. Do not know if he is still in business. He was 2 years ago!

@Jamiewednesday
If I can support you with hifi Ilona in any way as a native speaker - I love to help.

Here’s a pic of my emt jsd6 that i took the cantilever off of after only 10 hours or so of use!

I sent it to expert stylus and they have quoted £130 to repair, rebounding the cantilever back on.

Expert stylus have come back me saying they can’t repair mine!

That’s a shame! Hope you can get it sorted else where.
