Buy a turntable?

Local auction houses are a good place to buy vinyl. Prices are ridiculously low.

A quick search of easylive auctions, shows just under a 1000 lots are for sale in the near future.

Thank you all for your answers… I hesitate between the P1 to try but I’m afraid to be disappointed by the sound compared to digital which is very good in the sense that it sounds “analog” (soft, fluid but dynamic) or a P3 RS with an ND5 to be sure of having a certain quality… is the REGA Phono mk5 enough?

There are two things that attracted me to vinyl, the cost and the inconvenience.

I found a P3 with Elyse2 new for 435 pounds, interesting or not?

I think the Rega Phono is a decent unit as an alternative you could look at the Ifi Zen Phono V3 .

I succumbed to the CD revolution and sold my LP12 along with my entire vinyl collection in the mid 90’s and bought a CD player. After about 10 years and 500 CD’s I sold my entire hifi system because I just didn’t listen to it any more.
I moved to Leicester in the late 90’s and would often walk by the shop front of Cymbiosis and look at the LP12’s on display and think’ why the hell did I sell mine’.
Streaming came along but I still did not find this format engaging at all, that’s not because I don’t think it sounds any good on the contrary it makes perfect sense in 2025 to own a streamer based hifi.
Anyway in 2016 I decided to get back into vinyl and bought a Rega P2, Brio and speakers and the magic was back.
I have amassed about a 1k records since then and now have an LP12, Nait 50 and linn speakers and couldn’t be happier. I still have no interest in CDs or streaming other than using Spotify on my phone.
For me vinyl is where I sit down and listen to the music and enjoy the whole experience.
So just buy a turntable and enjoy the journey where ever it takes you .

I bought myself a Pro-Ject Automat A1, with a built-in preamp and fully automatic operation (I’m using it with a Unity Nova). The main idea was to listen to the old vinyl records I’ve had for years. But after exploring Roon and other sources like Tidal HiFi, I realized vinyl isn’t really my thing anymore—the sound quality through Roon is simply better. Still, out of nostalgia, I sometimes indulge in spinning a record or two.

I intend to do as you…

I ordered a P3 Elyse2 and a REGA Phono MK5 new for 650 pounds… if I’m disappointed I can sell it at the same price!

Excellent, I love Rega products especially their turntables. I am sure you will enjoy it including many hours crate digging in shops to find your favourite albums.
For me and I am sure many on the forum it’s not about what sounds better streaming, CD, vinyl etc it’s what make you enjoy the music and for some that’s all music formats and others just one.
Both my daughters are really into music and being in their 20’s have grown up with streaming as their main format.
My eldest daughter has just bought her first house and one of the first things she has bought is a vinyl based system. That says it all really about the allure of vinyl

Can anyone give me the length of the RCA cable? Thanks

Hi Dan

Please don’t use that word in connection with vinyl

best wishes

Rega tonearms typically come with at least a metre of cable measured from the exit of the arm tube under the plinth, probably closer to 1.2m

I ll say that i have ndx2 and i think that the turntable sounds better for a lot if not most of the content that i listen to.

I do not necessarily want a sound equivalent or better than my digital system, on the contrary, I am looking for a different sound, which also gives me a listening pleasure but quality… I’m going to have three different sources, vinyl, cd and streaming, I need only reel to reel…

I never compare my turntable and NDX on sound quality. It seems like a fool’s errand. I don’t even ask myself the question. I just sit and listen to whichever has the music I’m in the mood for.
