Can a child control Spotify on Uniti from front panel?

Hi, My 8 year old son cannot be trusted with a mobile phone (!) so I want a streaming setup for his bedroom which enables Spotify (or similar) to be controlled from the buttons/screen at the front. The original Naim Uniti can be had for a decent price so that would be ideal - if it has this functionality. Does anyone know please?
Thanks, Dan

Hi, Spotify can only be controlled from the Spotify app and cast to the streamer from there. On the 1st gen Unitis Tidal could be controlled from the front panel display/remote control, but Spotify will not allow it.

If you buy an old Uniti make sure that it is 24/192 capable and has up to date firmware, otherwise it won’t run any streaming services.

Thanks Chris.
If the Firmware has not been updated then is it the case that I can update it for free myself?
Regarding 24/192 capable - is that simply in order to have the best sound, or is it needed in order for it to be able to stream effectively?
Finally, I notice several on Ebay that are faulty - are they unreliable?

Is it not feasible to use a simple smartphone …no sim… and lock it down to use only Spotify?

The 24/192 streaming board is essential for Spotify, Tidal and some other services. It’s not just about sound quality.

Remember that these are old devices and some parts, including the streaming board, are no longer available. Be very careful when looking at anything sold as faulty.

Voice activated speaker could be an option.
Buy a cheap one initially, upgrade later if you wish.

My son has a one in his kitchen. Even I can use it, although I quite often ask Alexa to play a track when I should be talking to Siri.

Yes, it’s a bit of a faff compared to the ‘over the air’ updates that are the norm these days, but it can be done by connecting the streamer to a computer.

Thanks all. I have bought a Naim Uniti over a local Facebook for £300 (the seller says that the CD only works intermittently, but I will mainly be using it for streaming and wonder whether the problem might be the puck.) Fingers crossed I can get the streaming working adequately… I may well go with the locked down tablet option for my son, as he likes being able to read the lyrics…

Good luck!
