You have a SNAIC shaker!!?
my arm, yes, for the poor single SNAIC that I have here
Indeed, sorry for some reason I thought you bought it used.. I apologise.
No worries Simon
… and I actually think its fantastic that I bought a new set. No service in many years
Hi Guys
As you know, I have just purchased a 252, which is now playing and settling in. The volume knob suddenly fell off when I turned it manually. Is this something I should be concerned about? See photo. I see that there is a small slot in the middle of the metal piece on which the plastic volume knob sits. I carefully widened it a little with a screwdriver and put the volume knob back on.
I have an additional question. How much resistance should there be on the knob when I turn it, for example in comparison to a 272 volume knob? I think there is more resistance on the 252, which makes me think that it can slowly work its way off again when I occasionally turn it down in connection with lifting the pickup on my TT. Do you understand what I mean? I can turn it, but it doesn’t turn easily.
Am I overreacting again a little bit?
Kind regards, Peter
How does the volume motor sound when using the remote ?
It would seem that way, if memory serves me correctly the two use different types of volume control, hence they won’t feel the same.
The volume knob will have a little more resistance because it is motorised.
The “9 o’clock dilemma” is because Naim always developed their pre-amp products to use only the linear region of the volume potentiometer.
As Igel mentioned, just check the motorised operation of the volume knob.
It shouldn’t make any significant noise. Just a quiet “whirring” sound.
Have fun with your new purchase!
Just falling off isn’t great. I know there is a way to make it more secure, I think by pushing something into the little slot in the spindle, to make it a bit wider. Perhaps @NeilS can advise on exactly what to do.
The control will feel different in use, as it’s a different potentiometer, so that’s not something to worry about.
As Realitycomputer later says: Just a quiet “whirring” sound.
Yes that was also my thoughts, the reason of this resistans..
The “ fix” is to splay out that slot before refitting the knob. It’s not a great way to fix something that you want fixed until you need to remove it.
… so to answer the question you didn’t ask - you could leave the volume control where it is, and use the mute button?
I don’t find the mute button exactly comes easy to hand. Im more likely for attempt the mono button first.
It helps, thank you ![]()
We stopped using the screwdriver down the slot method, as it’s difficult to control an even spread & the knob can end up rotating eccentrically.

Thank you Neil
