Problem seems to be solved (although fingers firmly crossed)
It looks like the issue may be with Pentatone’s method of creating Hybrid multichannel discs (deliberately or otherwise).
I tried ripping (using dbpoweramp) invoking the ‘Defective by Design’ option.
Then burning to create an Audio CD (using Toast 20) in the usual way — still writing .aiff — and the new discs play nicely.
BTW Andy: it may have been my initial disappointment that the original branded discs didn’t play, rather than the sound from the CD 5si that made me think the copies didn’t sound as good as before. You know hi-fi people — we sometimes hear what we want to hear rather than … I’m now happy again!
