Make sure the the media server is running by testing access to it from another device.
What ‘media server’ are you running ?
I would try a (free) download of MinimServer and install that to your NAS, then configure it to point at the relevant folders. Minimserver is ultra reliable and used widely on NAS, Mac, Windows, plus Melco, Antipodes etc.
You should note that Fing, in the absence of a full function subscription automatically blocks new devices/IP’s. As far as I know cannot be unblocked without a subscription …
100%, Fing is a bit of a PITA and not sure what it actually does of any value.
I’ve used alternatives Ubiquiti WiFiman & Angry Scanner, but I then started wondering why.
I have deliberarly made my LAN as basic as needed but correcly setup and as a result it does not have any reliabilty or operational issues so I don’t bother with this stuff anymore.
I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago, with my Synology NAS.
I had updated the DSM software and then gradually realised that the Media Server app was incompatible with the new DSM software.
I finally got it working by uninstalling the old app (it wouldn’t auto-update) and then downloaded the latest version from the Synology website. All good after that.
I never found it particularly useful, so now that you have to register and sign in I just don’t bother. The one app I do find useful is Network Analyzer. It was a recommendation by Naim’s Phil Harris back in the day. You really need the paid version, but it’s not expensive.
Apologies for some of the noise. Even though there has been some genuinely informative and useful replies here - yourself included. It feels as though some have jumped the gun little and are merely making fairly broad suggestions - such as checking the Media Server is running. This indicates some haven’t really read my original post. I appreciate your piecemeal approach; as we don’t know exactly what the root cause is yet - so this seems prudent as a strategy. I have followed your advice and drilled into the specifics on UPnP for the Synology, within Fing - please see below. I’m no networking expert by any means, but it looks as though the UPnP section is displaying the existence of a Media Server function?
I had checked if the Media Server was running. Maybe I’m missing something readily apparent, but it looks like the service is installed, and running - please see below.
I have checked that Media Server in installed and running. What do you mean by, ‘You need to copy your music in the music folder on the Synology to play it from the NDX2’? I had this set up on my NDX, and it worked perfectly. I didn’t copy anything, I just connected the NAS, then pointed to the music folders on the Synology.
Indeed it does, and your other post indicates the uPnP server is running. Haven’t used the Synology server for ages, but clicking Open would usually get you some sort of config or browse interface?
Port 1900 UDP is correct.
So - my next step would be to try a non naim endpoint. Something free like VLC on an iPhone/iPad - does this see the uPnP server “HomeServer” on the browse tab…
I couldn’t see my server on VLC player from my iPhone. Also, although I could see a UPnP section on my PC Desktop, I also couldn’t see my Synology there either.
Was going to suggest setting a unique IP address for your NAS. When I have had issues seeing my NAS or serving from it, it has been because of an IP address conflict.
What I thought too. Set and forget. But the only item (s) that struggled to play by the rules were my ndx2 and NAS. My workaround was to set the IP for the NAS and the ndx2 was happy. Odd I know, but…..
Anyway, the OP can give it a go and tell us it worked or not.
… hmm ??? yes a bit odd.
I helped a mate set up a used NDX2 (it had the original owners IP Address) on his 5 y.o. Synology with everthing on DHCP, absolutly no problems or even a hint of hesitation, .
My instinct is to check/clear/reset both NDX2 and NAS and not forgetting the router GUI to DHCP.
Power down the whole house and restart …
Router first … wait until is 100% finished its startup process,
… then NDX2 … then NAS
