Car insurance shocker

After a ridiculous hike in our house insurance renewal this year for no valid reason (we’ve since moved to another provider), I was expecting the worst with my car insurance renewal…

The renewal email arrived this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see it had dropped from £490 last year to £340 this year, beating the comparison sites best quotes by £60.

I’ll take that as a small win this week !

I’m of the opinion that insurance premiums are based on the combination of real risk and a randomizer function (times any number greater than one). If you don’t search you pay through the nose.

Similar experience - I’ve yet to do something about the house insurance it’s such a pain to get comparative quotes without quite a bit of effort. I guess this is what the insurance companies rely so you dont switch!

My car insurance broker of the last 6 years hiked mine from £435 to £490 and said it was the best they could do without changing excess options. So I looked around and chose (surprise surprise) Lloyds Bank that included more or less the same excess numbers with a can’t refuse £328 offer that was only just few quid more than the lowest of the dot com vendors.
On the other hand, my wife’s broker, without prompting, offered a renewal deal for her car with same excess etc. that was £80 less.

My car insurers lowered my premium this year. And fair enough, it’s cheaper than I could find anywhere else. But it’s still almost $1,000. For six months! And house insurance is now almost $8,000 a year.

The moral of this story is: Don’t move to bloody Florida.

Yes, Lloyds came out best for us on house insurance this time. It’s always a bit of a lottery each time we renew.

Well my house insurance has increased a little this year but car insurance dropped by 25% (BMW320 MSport) and when I was discussing the house insurance I was told that accident free for 25 years (notwithstanding the BQ lorry driving into me!), clean license and there is advantage, apparently, in being nearly 67!

Same, my 320i ms was about £100 lower this year. Cheaper than my wife’s Qashkai!

When we had our Audi A3 we used Aviva Zero, which they promote as their ‘eco’ policy. We changed to a Renault EV last December, expecting the premium to stay around the same. I tried to change the car and Aviva refused to insure it, saying the wouldn’t insure EVs. That seems pretty stupid but they wouldn’t budge, so they gave us a pro rata refund and we went to LV, which cost us about £150 extra. It will be interesting to see what happens when we renew. The house policy is with Aviva too, but after their stupid attitude with the car I’m disinclined to give them any more of our money.

Nigel EVs and insurance is tricky, if the battery is damaged in an accident it can be a write off, and then of course the handling and disposal of the battery itself.

Be warned HH, my Aviva ‘Signature’ House Cover renewal just landed and they want £851 v £608 Y-1, this with never having raised a claim in 30+ years, and without ‘accidental damage’ and minimal ‘valuables’ (apart from a cheap Timex watch). Plus, I’m supposed to get a discount from my other Aviva business. I’m going to interrogate CTM tomorrow, and expect to find Aviva offering far cheaper terms on this and other platforms (as I found when helping someone else renew their car cover).

One of the recurring problems with Aviva is finding a human being to talk to and discuss anything at all.

IME, the comparison 'sites rarely provide all necessary details around the cover offered e.g. how they define item limits, so I call with the on-line ref to check and confirm. I’ve been able to do this with Aviva so far, and I always record their responses and the time of the call FAOD, just in case of a claim.

A family member is in the insurance industry, a normally very small damage can write off a very expensive EV, so not touching one of these things.

Same here with our Aviva renewal, hence the move elsewhere.

Try NFU Mutual. Your cal gets answered by a human being after just a few rings. You can then have a proper discussion about your requirements. They are probably not the cheapest but I am more than happy to pay for excellent service and prompt solution of claims.

Jacking up to change a flat can also cause damage.

I think most shipping companies will stop moving them shortly.
This is the latest,of a growing list, casualty China to Mexico thought to be caused by the ev batteries self igniting.
I understand that once the battery starts to burn it produces its own oxygen and nothing will put it out until the cycle has finished.
Such a vessel would be equipped with sufficient CO2 to quell other vehicle fires.
British owned and operated ship. Crew safe but casualty abandoned.

It’s always fun to have a pop at EVs. Someone will be saying that they are part of a woke conspiracy very soon.

Big batteries are probably not suitable for global trade.
