I was given some cat 5e cable about 30 meters which i run on the outside of the house recently (ordinary indoor stuff), well if it rots in time…well it’s not cost me anything. But when i was looking into it there was some outdoor cable from Amazon which had a oily greasy middle making it messy to work with some people moaning about it, not understanding that it was put there because it makes it weatherproof.

Project complete – i now have an ethernet port in the conservatory!
My first attempt failed continuity test – turns out that the punch down tool i was using wasnt working too well – not surprising as i bought it for less than £1. i then purchased a much better one – still under £4 and this had a much more positive action and all the 8 connections were securely in place.
It was a pain to run the cable round the house to the back – but i suspect this cable will probably outlast me --so i guess i have nothing to worry about!
